81 years ago today: Hannah Senesh executed by the Nazis

Hannah Senesh became a Zionist as a young girl and moved from her home in Hungary to Israel in 1939, where she joined the Haganah. In 1943, she became a paratrooper for the British army.

The following year, Hannah was sent on a secret mission to rescue Jews from Hungary. Arrested at the border, she was repeatedly tortured for several months, but refused to reveal any information about her mission. When the Nazis executed her on November 7, 1944, Hannah was only 23-years-old.
Throughout her short but heroic life, Hannah kept a diary and wrote poetry, which is widely acclaimed today. Senesh is a national heroine in Israel for her courage, poetry, and devotion to her country.

Today marked 9 years since legendary musician and true lover and defender of Israel, Leonard Cohen, passed away. When war broke out in Israel on Yom Kippur in 1973, Leonard Cohen was touring on the Greek island of Hydra. He dropped everything, left his wife and son, and headed to Israel. "I will go and stop Egypt's bullet," he said. He went and performed for Israeli troops on the front lines.

O Cazaquistão anunciou, nesta quinta-feira (6), que irá se juntar aos Acordos de Abraão, ampliando a lista de países de maioria muçulmana que integram o processo de normalização diplomática com Israel. O acordo foi confirmado em comunicado conjunto após uma reunião entre representantes dos dois governos em Astana, capital do Cazaquistão. O país se tornará o quinto membro dos Acordos, ao lado de Emirados Árabes Unidos, Bahrein, Marrocos e Sudão.

O país já mantém relações diplomáticas com Israel desde 1992, mas a adesão aos Acordos marca um novo patamar de cooperação política, cultural e econômica. A decisão reflete a intenção de fortalecer o diálogo regional e aproximar ainda mais o mundo muçulmano de Israel, num contexto de crescente apoio internacional ao processo de paz no Oriente Médio.

Os Acordos de Abraão foram mediados pelo presidente americano Donald Trump em 2020 e havia grande expectativa de que a Arábia Saudita também normalizasse relações com Israel. Isso mudou após a guerra na Faixa de Gaza, desencadeada com o massacre de 7 de Outubro. Há, inclusive, indícios de que as motivações do Hamas e do regime iraniano ao realizar o ataque era justamente impedir essa aproximação de Israel com o mundo árabe e muçulmano.

Um concerto da Orquestra Filarmônica de Israel em Paris foi interrompido na última quinta-feira (6) por manifestantes anti-Israel que soltaram bombas de fumaça e fogos de artifício dentro da plateia. O evento, realizado na Philharmonie de Paris, precisou ser momentaneamente suspenso após pelo menos duas interrupções com fumaças e gritos antes que o espetáculo fosse retomado.

Segundo autoridades francesas, quatro pessoas foram presas em conexão com a ação, e o ministro do Interior, Laurent Nuñez, afirmou que “nada pode justificar” tal comportamento no interior de uma sala de concerto.

A manifestação fazia parte de uma mobilização mais ampla de grupos pró-palestinos que haviam pedido o cancelamento do espetáculo. O sindicato CGT-Spectacle, que representa trabalhadores da cena artística francesa, havia solicitado que o local alertasse o público sobre “as acusações muito sérias que pesam contra os dirigentes daquele país”, em referência a Israel.

A direção da Philharmonie de Paris, por sua vez, condenou o ocorrido, ressaltando que, independentemente das opiniões sobre o conflito, “é completamente inaceitável ameaçar a segurança do público, dos artistas e da equipe”.

Infelizmente, esse é apenas mais um dos muitos casos de antissemitismo e de violência contra cidadãos israelenses ao redor do mundo desde o massacre realizado pelo Hamas em 7 de outubro de 2023. O fato de esse ataque em particular ter acontecido no contexto atual, de cessar-fogo em vigor na Faixa de Gaza, deixa claro que o verdadeiro objetivo de manifestações como essa não é a mera crítica a Israel.
