Effect of the turbulence model on the simulation of the air flow in a solar chimney

A B S T R A C T
The present paper focus on the impact of the numerical model on the air flow characteristics inside a solar chimney power plant. Computational simulations have been carried out using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Ansys-Fluent 17.0. Five turbulence models were tested to present the distribution of the air flow characteristics such as the magnitude velocity, the temperature, the pressure and the turbulence characteristics. The above work showed that the turbulence model types affect directly the numerical results. Computational results were based on the experimental results founded in the literature to choose the adequate model.

Enhancing Facility Management through BIM 6D

A B S T R A C T
BIM has been widely adopted by the construction sector, though Facility Management (FM) is still based on a variety of disparate FM systems. The operational phase requires comprehensive set of well-structured information regarding the building asset. Therefore, a BIM model filled with the multifarious information from the pre-use phase ought to be exploited through its integration with existing FM systems. This paper aims to appreciate the contribution of BIM in optimizing the processes conducted conventionally within the FM practice. The importance of sustained information flow for the efficient operational stage is a prerequisite of the further discussion. The exploration of FM application areas for BIM-enabled processes is aimed to depict the potential of the BIM for FM concept. By elaborating on the existing challenges concerning the shift from traditional FM processes to new BIM-based approach the outstanding problems are realized. On these grounds advice is provided. The study focuses mainly on new investments, where information management must be sustained from the project inception until the current operational stage. The paper proves the potential of BIM for the optimization of FM practices, presenting a wide range of application areas followed by tangible benefits for the building performance across its life-cycle. Identified barriers are assumed to be mitigated by diligent implementation of provided recommendations. It is concluded that BIM-based FM processes have the potential to shed a new light not only on the FM sector itself but on the perception of the whole industry being based on the collaborative approach towards delivery of the intelligent facilities. Nevertheless, such results demand profound cultural changes within the construction sector, with the FM appreciation as a starting point.

📌 Use of LoD decision plan in BIM-projects

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is new to many companies, and the implementation is consequently challenging. Challenges include unstructured processes that often leads to time and cost overruns. This study assesses how the creative design processes can be scheduled in projects using BIM tools. More specifically, it seeks methods that assures a proper schedule by decision planning. One of the decision tools studied uses the theoretical concept of Level of Development (LoD) to structure design processes. This paper is based upon a literature review followed by four case studies. The cases, which are all using BIM, are studied through interviews and document studies of execution plans, decision plans and BIM-manuals. Three general interviews and twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with key personnel from owners, contractors and consultants. The study reveals that decision plans are seldom used in the design process and decisions about design elements are seldom formally locked during the process. This demands much from the design manager who has to point out the critical path to assure keeping schedule. It also reveals that several models are delivered with a higher or lower LoD-level than necessary. This can lead to a high number of change orders. The paper concludes with a conceptual model of a LoD decision plan. Furthermore, the findings show that such a LoD decision plan can help owners, designers and contractors to communicate decisions in a timely manner and control the design process. In the long run, the conceptual model facilitates for knowledge transfer from one project to another. It is not common to use LoD decision plan in Norwegian BIM-projects. This conceptual model can be of use for companies who want better control over their BIM design processes

📌 Using BIM to Retrofit Existing Buildings

🔺A B S T R A C T
A large number of ongoing research programs are looking into the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) platforms to optimize design and construction processes. BIM based tools (e.g., Bentley AECOsim Building Designer, Tekla Structures, Autodesk Revit’s Architecture, Structure, MEP, and Navisworks) can handle numerous types of data input (e.g., 3-D design, energy models, schedules, cost estimates) and offer rigorous simulation and visualization options in an integrated manner allowing engineers and contractors to track and control their projects effectively. A similar set of research projects are investigating the use of sustainability principles (e.g., waste reduction, energy savings, healthy indoor environment) to optimize the management of projects throughout design and construction. The link between BIM and sustainability has been flagged in the literature especially in energy-driven retrofits. Nonetheless, the application of BIM to retrofit existing buildings faces challenges which could be due to the multi-disciplinary nature of information exchange, the timeliness of the exchange, and the wide array of technological components that are needed to ensure an optimal exchange. This paper describes, through a critical review of the literature, the areas which are mostly covered under BIM and sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to examine the overlap between the two topics where BIM offers a platform for reducing energy consumption in existing buildings. Finally, a research agenda on enhancing the role of BIM in energy-driven renovations is proposed.
