📌 Modelling natural ventilation in double skin façade

🔺 ABSTRACT
The assessment of the energy performance of buildings with Double Skin Facades (DSF) requires proper dynamic simulation tools, based on models capable of predicting heat and mass transfer in the DSF under variable boundary conditions, at the price of a reasonable computational effort. Many DSF simplified models have been developed and implemented in building simulation tools, but the validation of these tools is still an open issue, especially for the prediction of the mass flow rate in naturally ventilated DSF. The CFD modelling activity presented in this work aims at investigating the reliability of the assumptions and hypotheses employed in the simplified model, which was specifically developed for the dynamic simulation of heat transfer in buildings. Both the CFD and simplified models have been tested and evaluated on an experimental case study, using the database provided by a research program developed under IEA ECBCS Annex 43/SHC Task 34, reporting the results of a measurement campaign conducted on an a transparent naturally ventilated DSF tested in Denmark, in an experimental facility called “the Cube”.

📌 INTELLIGENT BUILDING SKINS: Parametric-Based Algorithm for Kinetic Facades Design & Deylighting Performance Integration

🔺 A B S T R A C T
This thesis presents the design of an algorithm and parametric process developed in Grasshopper, a plugin for Rhino 3D, using DIVA for daylighting simulation. The main objective of the process and algorithm is to evaluate the performance of an intelligent façade, composed of a series of kinetic louvers that actuate in response to dynamic daylighting, and the incorporation of occupants’ preferences. Within the framework of this study, Grasshopper as a parametric
computational tool allows the integration of Rhino, the design space, and DIVA, the dynamic
daylighting tool, into a single process. The parametric tool extracts the designed geometry from the modeling space and inputs it into the DIVA component to be tested for illumination performance, luminous distribution, and daylight penetration depth inside an office space.
The thesis presents the initial experiment, in which the external skin actuates to optimize daylight-deflection, maintaining a desirable luminous indoor environment. In the experiment, the louvers rotate using the concept of independent tilt-angle, where every other louver has the
same tilt angle; they could be in a harvesting, shading, or a combined configuration.

طراحی داخلی نیزاز مباحثی است که هر روز اهمیت بیشتری می یابد و نیاز به توجه و تخصص بیشتری پیدا می کند.
در طراحی داخلی، گذشته از مسائل روانشناسی، بحث مصالح و فناوری نیز اهمیت یافته تا درکنار بهینه سازی مصرف انرژی با بهره گیری از نور طبیعی، ذخیره انرژی و غیره احساس آرامش و امنیت روانی در ساکنین بناها به وجود می آورد. یکی از مهمترین راهکارهای کاهش مصرف انرژی، شناخت مصالح هوشمند و استفاده کارآمد از آن ها در طراحی می باشد. برای مثال استفاده از فضای سبز چه در داخل و در بام باعث تلطیف هوا شده و از اثرات مخرب زیست محیطی می کاهد. همچنین سایه بان های متحرک، بستر مناسب برای استفاده بهینه از نور خورشید را در طول روز به ما می دهند. با توجه به اهمیت انرژی، موضوع این مقاله به بررسی راهکارهای کاهش مصرف انرژی در طراحی داخلی ساختمان های مسکونی اختصاص یافته است که سعی شده با استفاده از روش کتابخانه ای به جمع آوری اطلاعات و دسته بندی عوامل مؤثر در برقراری پایداری پرداخته شود.
