BIM ‘Level two’ is to be mandated on all publicly procured projects from 2016 and requires a paradigm shift for the UK construction industry. Trafford Borough Council were keen to implement the use of BIM on Springfield Primary School. Kier provided strategic advice on this including conducting CPD workshops on how BIM affects both macro and micro level strategies.

📌 BIM as Evaluation Tool for Existing Building Energy and Quantities Takeoff

🔺 Abstract:
The main reason behind this evolution was the incorporation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to be an inefficient construction approach.
The results obtained from this work show that the knowledge and expectations of BIM within existing building have an admirable achievements for construction industry. Furthermore, BIM approach used in this work made more progress in the implementation of BIM as a rehabilitation and renovation tool in civil projects. The conclusions from this study reflect high correlation between the quantities take off with what as-built constructed, more than the traditional approach. The glamorous lessons derived from BIM implementation for the case study is; working with a model in which all project team feel comfortable and harmonic, will ensure enough resources to make the model updated and ought to lead to a minimum conflict within the model or what traditionally called “project documents”.

📌 BIM and energy efficient retrofitting in school buildings.

🔺 Abstract:
The aim of the research project presented in this paper is to experiment actions to improve the existing school building management and maintenance through a technological and process innovation based on the Building Information Modeling (BIM). In the field of refurbishment and reuse of existing buildings, some of the most sensible and specific sectors are investigated, particularly focusing on energy efficiency, structural improvement, up-to-date information on completed works and quality control. The project’s goal is to take advantage of the information technologies, beginning from software interoperability, and defining a new working philosophy that should use the BIM also in the monitoring, managing and maintenance phases. This will result in an advanced drafting of the design standards for refurbishment/reuse of public buildings by a hierarchic data structure (Preliminary Requirements). The optimization of the process will lead to a complete building modeling (architecture, structure, facilities, deterioration) in order to describe both the residual building performance and the outgoings of the refurbishment design (Final BIM Requirements). The research has been validated by on-field application (school buildings).

📌 BIM in Sustainable Design: Strategies for Retrofitting/Renovation

🔺 Abstract:
Improving the performance of existing buildings has provided a broad market for the green renovation of US building stock which is estimated at 76 billion square feet. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has had tremendous impact on the building industry by increasing productivity and document accuracy alone. The integrative nature of BIM technology renders it an ideal tool for implementing sustainable strategies into the renovation and/or retrofit of existing structures.

To provide a baseline in determining possible “best practices” a professional survey was conducted, within the state of Florida, along with an analysis of a local existing structure. The survey focused on determining to what extent professionals utilize BIM to implement sustainable design principles in retrofitting/renovation and how BIM and sustainability impacted their practice. The case study investigated the process for conducting a total renovation with a goal of utilizing BIM in as many areas as possible to provide a sustainable outcome. To comply with current LEED rating systems an evaluation was made to determine what level the alterations would achieve under the category of LEED 2009 NC.

📌 BIM-based interoperable workflow for energy improvement of school buildings over the life cycle

The present research applies a BIM2BEM approach to provide a public administration with a model for facility management (i.e. BIM) and a model to assess energy improvement and check the choices (i.e. BEM), as a pilot project on school buildings renovation. Schools are frequently out-of-date buildings in harsh need of structural and energy refurbishment and public administrations require consistent economic evaluations considering the payback time of the proposed solutions. Additionally, O&M (Operation & Maintenance) costs should be included in a life cycle evaluation of the buildings. Two schools with different layouts and configuration adopted as case studies to compare energy simulation to actual consumption. The workflow empowers the energy simulation results highlighting the accuracy of energy modelling in different situations and it introduces possible tuning strategies to decrease uncertainty.

🔺 Abstract
The present research focuses on the cold climatic region in Iran, which is characterised by a continental climate, and it examines the city of Tabriz as a case study. The primary aim was to study the suitability of passive houses in Iran’s cold climatic region and to identify those architectural factors most relevant for reducing building energy consumption. This work therefore attempts to answer the following two questions: firstly, are passive houses climatically, technologically and economically suitable for Iran’s cold climatic region? And secondly, which architectural factors can most effectively decrease building energy consumption in this climate?
This work also briefly examines theoretical aspects of climate and of the effect of climatic factors on buildings, as well as examining the climatic response of various building types, passive solar heating systems and various passive and hybrid cooling methods. In addition, the work compares the energy situation, climate and residential architecture in Iran and Germany, and it introduces German concepts of energy efficient building and standards, with an emphasis on passive houses.

دوربین ترموگرافی و تصویر برداری حرارتی

🔺 ترموگرافی یا عکسبرداری حرارتی یکی از روش های موثر در تعیین میزان اتلاف انرژی و انتقال حرارت در ساختمان، موتورخانه، کشاورزی و صنایع به شمار می رود. دوربین های حرارتی با استفاده از ردیابی تابش در محدوده مادون قرمز دمای یک سطح را اندازه گیری می کنند.

🔺 ترموگرافی این امکان را فراهم می کند که با تعیین سطوح هدردهنده ی انرژی در جداره ها و درزهای ساختمان، تأسیسات موتورخانه، تاسیسات و تجهیزات کارخانه ها و غیره شرایط لازم برای محاسبه ی هدررفت انرژی و انتقال حرارت و همچنین هزینه های تحمیل شده ناشی از آن به دقت محاسبه شود و با ارائه ی روش های کنترلی مانند عایقکاری به راحتی بتوانیم از هدررفت انرژی و اتلاف سرمایه جلوگیری کنیم.

🔺 به عنوان مثال قسمت های داغ در یک تصویر حرارتی درواقع نشان دهنده ی آن مناطقی هستند که عایقکاری آسیب دیده و یا از بین رفته است و قسمت های سردتر نشانگر بخش هایی است که دارای عایق بی عیب و نقص است.

🔺 همچنین یكی از كاربردهای مهم آن بررسی عایق بندی درزها، تلفات حرارتی و افت حرارت و بررسی ميزان افت گرما از طریق جداره ها، درزهای پنجره و غیره می باشد.
