📌 Lessons from the Past:
Climatic Response of Iranian Vernacular Houses to Hot Climate Conditions
🔺 Abstract:
This study discussed and analyzed the vernacular approach and climatic design of traditional Qajarian houses, which survived for at least one hundred years in Iran. Building orientation according to the sun, construction materials, compatibility with water sources and wind power, and finally structural organization are five parameters which have been analyzed in two buildings in the hot climatic region of Iran. Data collection relies on library research and empirical case study. This research shows the analyzed buildings’ design and construction are the response to their climatic situation and are compatible with their contexts. While these buildings are located in two cities with some climatic differences -especially humidity-, their vernacular design strategies have some similarities. However, their differences due to their distinct climatic conditions are undeniable. Finally, the research displays that these buildings put into service climatic opportunities, which are the aftereffect of centuries of optimization of building orientation, material use and construction capabilities with less environmental impact.

Retrofitting existing buildings for energy efficiency has been identified as an effective measure to reduce global energy consumptions and greenhouse gas emissions. Many governments and organisations have put significant effort towards energy efficiency improvement in existing buildings. In this research, a comprehensive review of the barriers to retrofitting, retrofitting guidelines and research progress to date has been carried out. …
It was found that although existing research has shown the importance of conducting a risk assessment in the building retrofitting process, none of the currently available retrofitting guidelines of different countries includes risk assessment. …
Risk assessment is important to ensure that the predicted energy saving is achieved once the building is retrofitted and in use. In addition, it was also found that some guidelines have no directions for post occupancy evaluation of installed retrofit measures. Based on the review, the essential steps of a building retrofit guideline are proposed, outlined and discussed in this paper.

📌 An Environment for Advanced Simulation and Control of Lighting Systems
🔺 A B S T R A C T
This thesis presents two main contributions to the challenging area of the lighting industry: First, a lighting control scheme is proposed which integrates artificial lighting and daylight harvesting. Secondly, the development of an application programming interface is presented which allows one to integrate a control scheme with a simulated scene. The latter part of the contribution could be particularly beneficial for quasi-real-time validation of a lighting control algorithm against a virtual environment. The simulation environment can be deployed on a cloud environment. The case study discussed in this thesis is a scaled down version of an open-plan office lit through a set of individually addressable LED luminaries. It is further assumed that a second source of luminous flux is available in the form of natural light. The control problem consists of maintaining a level of illuminance which meets the users’ requirements while minimizing the energy consumption. The proposed intelligent lighting system is based on an adaptive multivariable control scheme where the parameters of the model are determined through a simple identification procedure.
