Vande Mataram
Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s, Vande Mataram appeared in his novel Anandamath (1882) and became the anthem of India’s freedom movement. It was first sung at the 1896 Indian National Congress session.
On 24 January 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted it as India's National Song. Dr. Rajendra Prasad stated it would enjoy equal respect with Jana Gana Mana.
