One in five taxpayers will be paying the higher-rate by 2027 as Rishi Sunak's stealth raid forces millions to hand more of their earnings to the govt.

It will push the number of people paying a tax rate of 40% or more on their earnings to 7.8mn by 2027-28, as per Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) data.

The IFS warned that the freeze will “disincentive work” and drag hundreds of thousands of teachers and nurses into higher rate tax bands as UK households face a record fall in income this year.
