5 years Women Defend Rojava – We will continue our struggle with even more determination

In 2018, Turkey attacked and occupied Afrîn, and in 2019, Gîre Spi and Serêkanîye. In response, the Kurdish Women’s Movement (Kongra Star) called for international support. Since then, the campaign Women Defend Rojava gathers many internationalist solidarity activities with the Women’s Revolution and the people of Rojava.

For 5 years we have been organizing in more than 36 committees around the world. We have took actions, published leaflets, books and dossiers, we have organized education, information events and delegations.

Today again, the people of Syria and the whole Middle East are under attack. At a time when the destruction by capitalist patriarchy is intensifying and war is spreading all over the world Islamist gangs, fed by the Turkish state, are terrorizing the people and continuing the policies of genocide and feminicide. This attacks are against Rojava and our hope for peace in the Middle East.

⚡️📢 Stand Against Turkish attacks and Jihadist Militias!

In the midst of the the ongoing war of imperial and islamist forces against the people of the Middle East, Turkey uses the situation to carry out one of the largest attacks against Rojava and Syria since 2019. As part of Turkey's Neo-Ottoman project to become the hegemonic power in the region, the Turkish state aims to liquidate revolutionary Rojava and further destabilize Syria.

We call on all democratic, revolutionary, and solidarity forces around the world to:

1. Protest against institutions & profiteers of the Turkish state
2. Organize rallies and actions to raise awareness of the attacks & expose the complicity of international powers, especially the role of Turkey and Islamist forces

Update Syria 5.12.2024 14:45
Jihadists capture major city of Hama

In Syria, the major city of Hama was captured by the jihadist militias of HTS and SNA at midday. After threatening to encircle the city, the Syrian army withdrew from the city largely without a fight, according to its own statements “to protect civilians”.

Should the major city of Homs, around 40 kilometers south of Hama, also fall, the regime's territories would be divided in two.

Meanwhile, the self-administration in northern and eastern Syria stated that around 15,000 people in the Shehba region, which was occupied by the SNA at the weekend, were still being prevented from fleeing. There had also been abductions in the region. 120 vehicles with fleeing civilians had been taken to an unknown location.

Turkish, Russian and Iranian foreign ministers want to meet this week to discuss the situation. Turkey has repeatedly cited the failure of these talks as the reason for the offensive.

⚡️Situational update from Rojava:

Clashes between the SDF and the SNA took place west of the Euphrates on the night of December 4 to Thursday, December 5. Several sources speak of advances and territorial gains for the SDF. The area lies south of the Minbic region. In recent days, both Turkish media and the SNA have announced their intention to advance on Minbic. The first attempts were successfully repelled in the last few days. In addition to Minbic, the symbolic town of Kobane, which is close to the border, could also be in Turkey's sights.

It is not only in the Euphrates region that the Turkish state attacks the Self-Administration on a daily basis. On December 4, an Arab youth, Ebdullah Elî El Ehmed, and a Kurdish youth, Enas Temam Mihemed, were killed in a drone strike in the small town of Dêrik in the east of the Self-Administration. Today, December 5, both were buried in Derik under huge public attendance.

Both were sitting in the evening sun at a car wash in the city center when the rocket hit. Today, December 5, both were buried in Derik under huge public attendance.

Meanwhile, more than 100,000 people have fled from the SNA-occupied Shehba to the Self-Administration areas further east. In the middle of winter, people have lost their homes and at least one child has already frozen to death. While the de facto war situation persists, the Self-Administration is trying its best to provide for the people. The population is called upon to show initiative and take in the people. The Kurdish Red Crescent, Heyva Sor, is collecting donations internationally.

In the Shehba region, which is now occupied and controlled by Turkish-led jihadists, around 15,000 people have been banned from fleeing to the Areas of the Self-Adminstration. There are reports that young men are being pulled out of cars on the grounds that they could be fighters. The SDF announced that an entire car convoy of over 100 vehicles was hijacked by refugees today, December 5. There is great fear that people, especially women, will be tortured and enslaved, just like under ISIS.

After days of fighting in the city of Hama, it has now fallen into the hands of the Islamist militia HTS. Shortly after the withdrawal of the Assad regime's troops, HTS announced that it would now start the "March on Homs", which is the last city before the Syrian capital Damascus. A spokesman for the KCK (Union of Communities of Kurdistan), Zagros Hiwa, warns of NATO's possible plan to divide Syria into three parts. This would mean that there would be a Kurdish part, a Sunni part under the control of the HTS and an Alevi part under the control of Assad.

It is still difficult to predict what the future of Syria and large parts of the Middle East will look like. As in the self-administrated district of Sheikh Maqsood in northern Aleppo, which is holding out despite the most adverse conditions, old and young are preparing for resistance in all the towns and villages of the Self-Administration. Even though Shehba has been occupied, it is clear to everyone that no one will leave the field without a fight. The images of demonstrations and actions all over the world also reaffirm to people here that Rojava and the Self-Administration will be defended everywhere in the world.

📢 SDF/YPJ General Command Statement: "We are ready to defend our people"

➡️ Commander of YPJ Rohilat Afrin:
In the Shehba region, HRE forces resisted the attacking force until the last moment.

The gangs [SNA] define themselves with different names, but we know that the occupying state of Turkey manages this force.

Some female fighters were captured. We will take revenge for these women. We are ready to protect the existence of North-East of Syria, and all the women there.

➡️ SDF General command Mazloum Abdi:
“We knew about the developments in Aleppo for two months and we have taken appropriate measures and we were ready but surprised by the lack of resistance of the Syrian regime”

“What matters to us in these conditions is that we opened a humanitarian corridor to save our people in the Aleppo countryside.”

The SDF has sufficient forces to repel any Turkish aggression in our areas.

Statement by Manbij Military Council

Update: Turkish Occupation and Its Mercenaries Intensify Attacks on Manbij

The Turkish occupation forces and their mercenaries have escalated their attacks in and around the villages of Manbij for the second consecutive day. Turkish occupation drones carried out dozens of airstrikes, while their mercenaries launched hundreds of artillery shells and rockets to cover joint ground offensives by Turkey-backed mercenaries and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham elements targeting villages south and west of Manbij.

Among these, the mercenaries launched an assault on the village of “Andabat,” near the Sajur crossing. Fierce clashes ensued between the Manbij Military Council forces and the mercenaries, who were ultimately forced to retreat under the strikes of our forces.

On the “Deir Hafir” axis, the Tabqa-Aleppo road, and other fronts around Manbij, the Turkish occupation army directly led the attacks. At least 20 drone strikes targeted these fronts, with the Turkish state monitoring the positions of the Manbij Military Council forces, providing information to their mercenaries, and directing their movements on the ground. Despite intense clashes that continued from last night into this morning, all such attacks were successfully repelled.

In response to these assaults, the Manbij Military Council forces, with support from local residents, have shown heroic resistance. They have managed to fend off the attacks amid ongoing heavy clashes across multiple fronts, particularly in the Arima region and south of Manbij.

Our forces affirm their legitimate right to defend Manbij and its people. We call on our community to adapt to the current circumstances, protect their region, and maintain its stability alongside our forces.

⚡️ The attack on Minbic has started
Situation update from Rojava 07.12.2024

The attack on Minbic has begun. All of Syria is on the move, the borders of controlled territories are shifting almost hourly, and the international stage is no longer calm either. Almost the entire Middle East, as well as hegemonic powers such as the USA and Russia, are now involved in the conflict. Syria, which has become one of the central theaters of World War III since 2012, has not lost any of its significance for geostrategic and ideological conflicts today.

Yesterday, on December 6, the commanders of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi and Rohilat Afrin, announced that in connection with the collapse of the Syrian army, the Islamic State has recognized a window of opportunity. According to reports, there have been attacks and territorial takeovers by ISIS in several places in the interior of the country. Since this has an impact on the security situation in the entire autonomous administration, steps have been taken to prevent a scenario like the one in 2014, when ISIS was able to spread uncontrollably from Iraq into large parts of Syria, taking advantage of the power vacuum that existed at the time.

Since December 5, the SDF, in coordination with the Assad regime, has taken over numerous areas, which were hastily abandoned by both the Syrian army and Iranian militias. The Euphrates River, which for many years was the western border of the self-administration in the southern regions, was crossed at several points. Meanwhile, the city of Deir ez-Zor and the strategic border crossing at Al-Bukamal in the far south are under the control of the SDF. Large areas to the south of the city of Raqqa have also been secured. On Friday evening, December 6, the regime also withdrew from previously controlled neighborhoods in Qamishlo and Heseke, where honking cars and fireworks broke the silence of the night.

The attack on the Minbic region has begun. On Friday, December 6, the so-called “Syrian National Army” announced that it had begun its attack on the city of Minbic. Throughout the night there was an intense exchange of artillery fire. In the villages in the area, there were skirmishes, but no significant territorial gains. Suicide drones have also been used by the Islamists. Some media report that the SNA has been trained in their use in Ukraine. Three Self-Defense Force fighters were killed in the attacks during the night of December 6-7. Minbic is located east of the Euphrates, and over 100,000 people live in the city that was liberated from ISIS in 2017. On Saturday, December 7, the SNA launched a major offensive from the south, west and north.

The SDF announced that it would carry out counterattacks in the context of legitimate self-defense along the front lines, with a particular focus on the SNA-controlled city of Al-Bab. Likewise, one of the SNA headquarters was bombed, although it is unclear whether it was an Israeli or a Russian air strike. Both have a problem with the fact that the SNA, with the capture of Aleppo, has gained control of heavy weapons systems, which they have brought into north-eastern areas. It is unclear to what extent Turkey itself will become directly militarily active.

The advance of the Islamist militia HTS has been stopped for the time being near the city of Homs. On Friday, December 6, there was a meeting between Turkey, Iran and Russia in the so-called “Astana Format”. The results of the meeting will have a direct impact on a possible ceasefire or a continuation of the war. Even before the meeting, Erdogan announced that he hoped the HTS would advance as far as Damascus. However, since the negotiating position of the Assad regime and also of Iran and Russia has now noticeably worsened, a deal favorable to Turkey is conceivable. The following days will also show the extent to which Israel, but also Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, are prepared to intervene with ground troops within Syrian state borders.

Syria is home to a wealth of different national and religious groups. Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the Assad regime has shown no willingness to engage in honest dialogue with the self-government or to open up to democratization. The contradictions that have arisen since then are now erupting in a confrontation with no end in sight. While the HTS aims to overthrow the regime and divide Syria into different territories, the SNA's sole objective is to crush the self-administration.

The third player, who is not included in this calculation, is the Autonomous Administration. It is strongly opposed to the planned fragmentation of Syria and will continue to fight for the democratization of all of Syria. Even if no major powers are on their side, the people in North and East Syria are certain that an end to the war is only possible on the basis of equality and freedom, and that the numerous people protesting on the streets today and tomorrow everywhere have their backs.
