Attacks on Self-Administration in Deir ez-Zor

Yesterday morning, mercenary forces of the Syrian regime attacked villages in Deir ez-Zor, in the self-administration of northern and eastern Syria, with artillery, mortars and bazookas.

This was reported by the Syrian Democratic Forces (QSD), which repelled the mercenary forces. Four civilians and three QSD members were killed in the fighting. Nineteen mercenaries were reportedly killed.

The QSD statement said, "The attack began at five in the morning and came from three different directions from Syrian regime-controlled areas on the west bank of the Euphrates River. Simultaneously with the heavy shelling, the mercenaries attempted to infiltrate the villages and communities of Abu Hardoub, Dhiban and Abu Hamam. [...] A mortar shell from the west bank of the Euphrates hit a civilian house."

In the context of the Middle East conflict, tensions are increasing throughout the Middle East, and this could affect self-rule in the future.

Protest against anniversary celebration in Turkish embassy

In Vienna yesterday there was a protest against the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey in the embassy.

The celebration was cynically advertised as a celebration of diversity and tolerance, while Turkey's history is marked by cultural and religious homogenization and genocides of the Greek, Armenian and Kurdish peoples.

In protest against the celebration, activists blocked access to the event. The embassy staff as well as the police reacted violently from the beginning and kicked the activists, one activist had to receive emergency medical care.

One police officer even pulled out his gun and ordered the protesters to lie on the ground.

The activists declared:
"We can't leave such an event without comment while Turkey is waging war and dropping bombs on the people of Rojava or supporting Azerbaijan in annexing Armenia."

Just 9 years ago, as the city was encircled by the forces of the self-proclaimed Islamic State, whose advance had been lightning-fast, a day of international mobilization was organized in support of the Kurdish resistance. On November 1, 2014, millions of people rise up around the world to express their support for Kobanê and denounce the international community's inaction and the collusion of certain states with Daesh.

The fierceness of the fighting and the resulting loss of human life made the heroic resistance of the self-defense forces a symbol of global resistance against the forces of reaction. A modern-day Stalingrad, this battle will forever be remembered as the one that changed the course of the war in Syria and the Middle East.

Palestine: On Turkish Hypocrisy

While the Israeli army has been committing carnage in Gaza since the Hamas assault on October 7, and a ground intervention has just begun, Turkey’s autocrat President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been particularly conspicuous by his presence. First as a potential “mediator” between the Israeli government and Hamas, then – as Israeli strategy seemed to take on ever more clearly genocidal contours – as a staunch defender of the Palestinian cause.

While Erdogan doesn’t hesitate to play up Israel’s indignation over attacks on Palestinian people, he is pursuing exactly the same policy against the peoples of AANES. Worse still, this policy benefited from many military agreements signed in the past between Turkey & Israel.
