He washed the feet of the ones who’d walk away.
He broke bread with the one who’d break Him.
That’s not weakness that’s divine love.

THE WISE DON’T HAVE “PROBLEMS”

THE WISE DON’T HAVE “PROBLEMS” “This is why we say that nothing happens to the wise person contrary to their expectations.” —SENECA, ON TRANQUILITY OF MIND, 13.3b
Hesiod, the poet, said that “the best treasure is a sparing tongue.” Robert Greene considers it a law ofpower: Always Say Less Than Necessary.

We talk because we think it’s helping, whereas in reality it’s making things hard for us. If our spouse isventing, we want to tell them what they should do. In fact, all they actually want us to do is hear them. Inother situations, the world is trying to give us feedback or input, but we try to talk ourselves out of theproblem—only to make it worse.

So today, will you be part of the problem or part of the solution? Will you hear the wisdom of theworld or drown it out with more noise?
What you see in this satellite image is a mass grave of people killed by RSF attackers in the El Fasher area of Sudan within the past two days! The satellite photo even zooms in to show pools of blood and piles of bodies! Yes — this is still Africa.
A continent where people say, “I am holy; I have higher moral values than the rest of the world,” yet here we are — Africa!

When I see what Africans are living through and where they are today, it reminds me of Europe’s Dark Ages — only this time, it’s Africa’s turn. I ask myself, “Why don’t we learn from history?” And before I can find an answer, I drift into another thought.
What amazes me most is that those same Europeans — the ones we say have lost their morals — are now a hundred times more civilized than we are! The countries that once tried to cleanse the world of peaceful nations — the Scandinavian and European nations — have reached a stage where people live happily.
Then I say, “Alright, they are healthy and fine,” but still, not much has changed. As I pause to think, seeing Europe’s elegance, I can’t help but wonder — have the thoughtful, moral Europeans of today become better than their faithful ancestors?
And I question: could it be that freedom breeds cruelty, and that thinking too deeply leads to suffering? Where, I wonder, did those philosophers who said such things even get their ideas from? I kept pondering deeply...

TRY THE OPPOSITE
“What assistance can we find in the fight against habit? Try the opposite!”

TRY THE OPPOSITE “What assistance can we find in the fight against habit? Try the opposite!” —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 1.27.4
Viktor Frankl, the brilliant psychologist and Holocaust survivor, cured patients sufering from phobiasor neurotic habits using a method he called “paradoxical intention.” Let’s say a patient couldn’tsleep. The standard therapy would have been something obvious, like relaxation techniques. Franklinstead encouraged the patient to try not to fall asleep. He found that shifting focus off the problemdeflected the patient’s obsessive atention away from it and allowed them to eventually sleep normally.

Fans of the TV show Seinfeld might remember an episode called “The Opposite” where GeorgeCostanza magically improves his life by doing the opposite of whatever he’d normally do. “If everyinstinct you have is wrong,” Jerry says to him, “then the opposite would have to be right.” The largerpoint is that sometimes our instincts or habits get stuck in a bad patern that pushes us further from ournatural, healthy selves.

Now you shouldn’t imediately toss out everything in your life—some stuff is working (you’re reading this blog!). But what if you explored opposites today? What if you broke the patern?

What is love?
In this world, there is nothing as mysterious as love; neither man, nor the devil, nor any other thing frightens me as love does. The reason is that nothing penetrates deeper into the soul than love. There is nothing else that fills and binds the heart as love does. Until we find a means to control this power, our souls will inevitably enter into the vast prison of love.
It frightens even the prophets and those ready to die for the truth; for, as is its nature, it compels many others to die with them. Often, it kills before them—sometimes after them—for it possesses the capacity to destroy.

ADVERSITY REVEALS
“How does it help, my husband, to make misfortune heavier by complaining about it? This ismore fit for a king—to seize your adversities head on. The more precarious his situation, themore iminent his fall from power, the more firmly he should be resolved to stand and fight. Itisn’t manly to retreat from fortune.”

As the CEO of Charles Schwab, Walt Betinger hires hundreds of people each year and interviewshundreds more. Over his lifetime, we can safely assume he’s had his share of hits, misses, andsurprises when it comes to bringing people on board. But consider one technique he’s used as he’s gotenolder: he takes a candidate to breakfast and asks the restaurant’s manager to purposely mess up thecandidate’s breakfast order.

He’s testing to see how they react. Do they get upset? Do they act rudely? Do they let this litle eventspoil the meeting? Do they handle the inconvenience with grace and kindness?

How you handle even minor adversity might seem like nothing, but, in fact, it reveals everything.
