Life Isn’t a Movie – Keep Going
I’ve never been a big fan of Ethiopian movies, except for a few gems like ጤዛ and ዶቃ—those are masterpieces. But beyond that, I don’t find most of them appealing.
Yesterday, I spent time with a family that loves Amharic series, the kind you’d find on DStv or Abol TV. I had no choice but to sit through a season finale. And I have to admit, the ending was the most perfect conclusion I’ve ever seen. Every enemy was captured, every wrong was made right—there was nothing left unresolved. It felt like life itself had ended in complete balance, as if nothing existed beyond that moment.
But real life isn’t like that.
I’ve worked on short films, and if you’ve seen my writing, you’d know that tragedy is a recurring theme. Ethiopian movies often feel too unrealistic. In reality, life keeps moving. On your worst days, remind yourself that they will pass. On your best days, remember that challenges will come again. That’s the rhythm of life.
There will be enemies. There will be friends. And there will be phonies. That’s just how it is. But no matter what, don’t stop. Don’t settle. Don’t rest in the middle.
When you’re at your highest, don’t assume the story is over. Life keeps going—until the casket drops.

In the profession I’m in now, I see doctors, surgeons, engineers, chemical engineers, dentists, college graduates, TVET students, and mechanics—people from all walks of life who once dedicated years to mastering their craft. But what’s heartbreaking is that many are abandoning their fields to chase stability and financial security.

Doctors spend 7–9 years in medical school, yet many no longer want to work in medicine. Engineers are looking for other opportunities. Professors with PhDs are leaving universities because their salaries are too low, and they’ve lost motivation to teach the next generation. The passion that once drove people to these careers seems to be fading.
I’m not saying seeking financial stability is wrong. It’s a necessity in today’s world. But it’s sad that our generation is forced to prioritize survival over passion. The truth is, many young people don’t know where to go. Even when they do, they are hesitant to take risks.
If you have the rare privilege of learning what you love, take a moment to appreciate those who suffered to give you that chance. Not everyone has that luxury. But regardless of your circumstances, don’t just follow the crowd. Instead, follow logic and reason.

Equip yourself with valuable skills. No matter what career path you choose, be smart about it. If you're in tech, push yourself to learn and grow. Be the best in multiple skills. Don’t give up. Take risks. Create opportunities.

Don’t let society’s norms and expectations define your life. Don’t do something just because it makes others happy or boosts your ego. Titles like “doctor” or “lawyer” may sound impressive, but if they don’t align with your purpose, they’re meaningless.

Be responsible for your own growth. Don’t let emotions or external pressures dictate your choices. The world is tough, but those who adapt, take risks, and invest in their skills will find a way forward.
