⚡️ BRICS Joint Media Statement following the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations on the margins of 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (New York, September 26)

👉 Read in full (Telegraph: I, II)

Key points:

• The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, multipolarity and upholding international law, including the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations (UN), in their entirety and interconnectedness as its indispensable cornerstone and the central role of the UN in the international system.

• The Ministers reiterated their commitment to ensuring greater and more meaningful participation and representation of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs), as well as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), especially from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, in global decision-making processes and structures and making them better attuned to contemporary realities.

• The Ministers called for more just and equitable global governance and mutually beneficial relations among nations based on international law with an enhanced role for the Global South and the developing world in global governance.

• The Ministers reiterated their support for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, with a view to making it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of developing countries in the Council’s memberships so that it can adequately respond to prevailing global challenges and support the legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including #BRICS countries, to play a greater role in international affairs, in particular in the United Nations, including its Security Council.

• The Ministers expressed concern over proliferation of trade-restrictive actions, whether in the form of indiscriminate rising of tariffs and non-tariff measures, or protectionism, in particular measures used as a means of coercion that threaten to further reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty into international economic and trade activities, potentially exacerbating existing economic disparities and affecting prospects for global economic development.

• The Ministers commended four consecutive developing countries as G20 Presidencies of Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa during 2022-2025. They applauded the inclusion of the African Union as a full G20 member and the inclusion of voices from the Global South in the G20 mandate.

• The Ministers condemned the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and expressed grave concern over the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East.

• Cognizant of the growing complexity in contemporary global challenges, including heightened geopolitical tensions, they underscored the urgent need for collective responses. The Ministers agreed that BRICS will continue to play a proactive and constructive role in addressing global challenges through dialogue and diplomacy.

• The Ministers noted that the BRICS expansion reflects its influence, credibility, and appeal as an important platform for inclusive global governance and for amplifying the collective voices from the Global South. In this regard, they underscored the need for enhanced coordination, continuity and support for a long-term institutional development of the grouping.

📺 Remarks by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the General Debate of 80th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Key points (Unofficial translation):

• 80 years ago the most terrible war in human history came to an end. More than 70 million people fell victim to hostilities, hunger and disease. In 1945 the course of world history changed forever. We hold sacred the memory of brotherhood-in-arms with all Allies who then stood on the side of truth in the struggle against the forces of evil.

#UNCharterIsOurRules The principles and the Charter agreed upon by the founding fathers of our Organization still serve as a bright beacon for international cooperation.

• We advocate for the unconditional observance of the principle of equality. In it lies the guarantee that all countries can take their rightful place in world affairs, regardless of their military power, population size, territory or economy.

• Russia strongly condemned the Hamas militants’ attack on peaceful Israelis on October 7, 2023. However, there is no justification for the brutal killing of Palestinian civilians, just as there is no justification for terrorism.

• The Arabic language is not banned in Israel, nor is Hebrew in Arab countries or Iran – but the Russian language is banned in Ukraine. Let me recall that Article 1 of the Charter speaks of the need to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion. Europe remains silent, obsessed with the utopian goal of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.

• The rights of Russians and Russian-speaking people in the territories still under the control of the Kiev regime must be fully restored. On this basis we are ready to discuss the security guarantees for Ukraine.

• Russia and the US bear a special responsibility for world affairs, for avoiding risks that could plunge humanity into a new war.

• The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (#SCO) and #BRICS play a special role as mechanisms for coordination of countries of the Global South and East.

• NATO is already cramped in Europe, and it is expanding into the Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea, the Taiwan Strait, undermining the universal ASEAN mechanisms and creating threats not only to China and Russia but also to other countries in the region.

• Speaking of the future, we must not forget the lessons of the past – especially when Nazism is once again raising its head in Europe, militarization is gaining momentum under the same anti-Russian slogans. This causes particular concern given that a number of political figures, now in power in Brussels and certain EU and NATO capitals, seriously discuss World War III as a possible scenario.

We call on member states and the Secretariat’s leadership to scrupulously follow all the Charter’s principles – without exception and without double standards. Then the legacy of the UN’s founding fathers will not be wasted.

🎙 President Vladimir Putin's Address on the Day of Reunification of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Lugansk People’s Republic and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions with Russia (September 30, 2025)

💬 President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Friends, citizens of Russia,

I extend my heartfelt congratulations on this holiday – the Day of Reunification of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions with our vast, united country.

Three years ago, in referendums held in Donbass and Novorossiya, millions of our compatriots freely and independently chose their future.

They fulfilled a dream cherished for many years and made a momentous, historic decision: to be with their Fatherland, with Russia, to return to their native family of which they had always been a part. Together, we did what had to be done, and we are proud of it. We supported our brothers and sisters in their resolute and responsible choice.

Today, in defence of that choice, our soldiers and commanders go into battle, while the entire country works and fights for a just cause.

Together we defend our love for the Motherland and the unity of our shared history. We fight and prevail, safeguarding our vital national interests, our common memory and values, the Russian language, traditions, culture and faith, as well as our sacred right to honour the feats of our forefathers, generations of true patriots of Russia, both warriors and workers. Together, shoulder to shoulder, we will continue to build our common home – a great and independent nation, a sovereign state. We will overcome every trial and emerge even stronger.

I know how difficult life remains for the people of the liberated cities and towns. There are many urgent, pressing problems, including fundamental issues that affect everyone’s daily life, such as reliable water supply and access to quality medical care. It is not only a matter of restoring what was destroyed in the fighting, but also of repairing infrastructure that had been neglected for decades.

That is why a large-scale programme of socioeconomic development has been launched – in essence, the revival of our ancestral, historic Russian lands. The whole country, all Russian regions, are taking part. Thanks to their direct involvement and significant federal support, more than 23,500 facilities have been built or renovated in Donbass and Novorossiya since 2022. These include housing and schools, modern medical centres, sports facilities and advanced youth centres. Energy, communications, utilities and transport systems are being upgraded. Already 460 kilometres of utility networks and 6,350 kilometres of roads have been laid or modernised.

Yes, much remains to be done. But every task we have set will, without doubt, be accomplished. We will create the conditions needed to unlock the enormous potential of Donbass and Novorossiya – industrial, agricultural, scientific and cultural. These territories will become places where new families are created, children and grandchildren are raised, and opportunities grow for education, creativity, self-realisation and professional advancement.

On this holiday, in the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, I wish to address special gratitude to the soldiers and officers – the true heroes of our time.

Thank you for your loyalty to the Motherland, for your courage and valour, and for the dedication you show every day in your demanding military service.

I am confident that thanks to you, Russia’s security will remain reliably assured and that long-awaited and lasting peace will return to the heroic land of Donbass and Novorossiya.

We are together. And that means all our plans will be fulfilled.

Happy Reunification Day!

🎙️Interview with the Ambassador of Russia to Norway Nikolay Korchunov for TRT World Сhannel (August 26, 2025)

Main points

Today, the policy pursued by the Norwegian authorities poses challenges and threats to Russia's national security. This runs counter to a thousand years of peaceful neighbourly relations between our countries. The USSR and Norway fought together against German Nazism. The Red Army's offensive in Northern Norway in October 1944, which cost the lives of many Soviet soldiers, marked the beginning of the country's liberation from Nazi occupation.

Unlike Oslo, Russia has never sought to weaken Norway or inflict strategic defeat on it in military, economic or political terms. On the contrary, we consider it extremely important to ensure favourable conditions for the predictable and stable development of relations based on pragmatism, mutual respect and consideration of interests.

• Despite Oslo's discriminatory visa policy towards our citizens, which runs counter to the OSCE principle of promoting freedom of movement and contacts between people, as well as the relevant commitments within the Arctic Council, Russia opposes restrictions on direct contacts between people and has not introduced any prohibitive measures against Norwegian citizens.

• Norway has chosen to halt political dialogue and curtail trade and economic ties, sectoral cooperation, and interregional and cross-border contacts. The growing confrontation, uncertainty in relations, and lack of dialogue on all pressing issues, including in the field of security policy, are causing serious concern.

• This is having a complex negative impact on the situation in the Norwegian North. Norwegian businesses have suffered as a result of sanctions against Russia. It is regrettable that the pressing socio-economic needs of citizens are being sacrificed to belligerent militarism.

• As Arctic states, Russia and Norway bear responsibility for the fate of the region. The restrictions caused by the current geopolitical situation are artificial in nature and will therefore disappear sooner or later. Nevertheless, the path to normalising relations and restoring good neighbourly relations is unlikely to be easy – the lack of trust between the two countries is too great at present.

• The Arctic countries are currently in a difficult situation, facing challenges in the field of climate change, the cessation of full-fledged scientific cooperation, and the consequences of crises in other regions. There is a high risk of unintended incidents. In such a situation, the only thing that NATO's presence in the region contributes to is further escalation of tensions.

• While the approaches of some Arctic states are increasingly dominated by confrontation, antagonism and the promotion of forceful scenarios to secure their interests in the Arctic to the detriment of other countries, Russia's Arctic strategy focuses on internal issues related to the sustainable development while preserving the fragile Arctic environment, the way of life of indigenous peoples and, in general, ensuring the well-being of all inhabitants of the North.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answers to media questions following the 22nd annual session of the Valdai International Discussion Club (Sochi, September 30, 2025)

Question: As you know, China has recently put forward a global governance initiative at the SCO summit. Russia supported this initiative. What do you think is the practical significance of this proposal? Was the possibility of any joint actions within the framework of this global governance initiative discussed at the SCO and BRICS platforms?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: The initiative was put forward just the day before the summit. To be precise, we learned about it on the eve of the SCO meeting. Nevertheless, we believe it is useful, since it is aimed at setting right the situation in which global governance mechanisms have been completely subordinated to the West.

Take the International Monetary Fund, for example, where the United States is blocking the decision to increase quotas for countries of the Global South. Or the World Bank, where the West openly abuses its dominance. <...>

The World Trade Organisation also requires reform. For many decades, the United States has been blocking the work of its Dispute Settlement Body, above all to prevent this body from considering complaints brought by China over discrimination and blatant violations of WTO rules by Western countries.

And, of course, the United Nations. Reform of the Security Council and other UN bodies must be fair. This includes reform of the Secretariat, where key positions – those that essentially determine the functioning of the entire UN system and the allocation of financial resources – have long been monopolised by representatives of NATO and the EU. This situation is unsustainable. We will consistently advocate for reform of global governance.

As for practical aspects, we expect our Chinese colleagues, as the initiators of this proposal, to further elaborate their approaches. We will actively support them in this effort.

Question: There have been many bold statements coming from Washington recently. The US President’s Special Envoy, Keith Kellogg, in an interview with Fox News, claimed that Ukraine allegedly has permission to strike deep into Russian territory. The US Vice President, J.D. Vance, has stated that the issue of supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles is under discussion. Does Moscow view this as an act of pressure from the United States on Russia? How will the Russian authorities respond diplomatically?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: I believe this is, first and foremost, a result of pressure from Europe on Washington. The United States wants to demonstrate that it takes the opinions of its allies into account. I do not think we are dealing with a decision that has already been made. The Americans do not supply Tomahawks to just anyone. If I am not mistaken, among Europeans, only Spain and the Netherlands have received them. They have been somewhat cautious with others.

If they consider Ukraine to be a responsible state that will use them responsibly, that would be... surprising.

Indeed, Keith Kellogg and J.D. Vance have spoken about this. Incidentally, Keith Kellogg generally takes an entirely pro-Ukrainian stance. Although US President Donald Trump always says that “he is a mediator, and Ukraine and Russia should resolve matters directly,” Keith Kellogg recently publicly advised the Ukrainian regime to accept reality and de facto agree that the territory is as it is now. He suggested that they should not worry about it, as, for example, the Baltic states were part of the Soviet Union, and the US did not recognise them de jure, but they later became free. “The same applies here,” said Keith Kellogg. This diverges from the position held by President Donald Trump. There are many spokespersons who simply promote the Ukrainian agenda.

The Kremlin has already made its position quite clear. Even if these Tomahawks end up in Ukraine, it will not change the military situation.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question about the US President’s Gaza peace plan

Question: The media are writing about US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan. How would you comment on the US leader’s latest ceasefire initiative for Gaza?

💬 Maria Zakharova: Donald Trump’s plan provides for a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave, the release of hostages and all detained persons, as well as the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. It also includes lifting the blockade and ensuring free access of humanitarian aid to all those who need it under the auspices of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The leading Arab Muslim countries have expressed support for the plan. The Palestinian National Authority has confirmed its readiness for cooperating with all partners to shape a comprehensive peace agreement. Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly welcomed the new US plan.

❗️ Russia has always called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to bloodshed in Gaza.

We believe that any measures and initiatives aimed at this deserve to be supported. We hope that a ceasefire will become sustainable and will ultimately lead to lasting stabilisation in the Palestinian enclave. This will create the necessary conditions for launching comprehensive efforts to rebuild the sector’s infrastructure, which has been almost completely destroyed during the hostilities.

It is important that a successful and smooth implementation of this plan should pave the way to the resumption of a constructive dialogue between the Israeli and Palestinian sides on a comprehensive political settlement of all disputed issues on the recognised international legal basis, which provides for the creation of an independent Palestinian state that will live in peace and security with Israel.

🇷🇺 Comment by Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov to «Zvezda» (with English subnoscripts)

💬 Now the attitude is completely different, the world is changing, and so are positions

💬 For three years, they have never condemned the actions of the Ukrainians, who are striking the Zaporozhskaya NPP, its industrial site, and the city of Energodar, where employees and their families live

💬 No one is seriously concerned about nuclear safety, the «Westerners» are concerned with always protecting the Ukrainians, even when they commit outrageous acts

📄 The Russian Foreign Ministry has published a Report “Regarding the actions (and inaction) of the authorities of Italy, Germany and Japan, resulting in destruction and falsification of history, justification of fascism and its accomplices”.

Full report available on the Russian MFA website (PDF).

✍️ In the year marking the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory over Nazism (World War II), not only in Russia but across the world many are rightly asking: to what extent have the lessons of the struggle against Nazism, fascism and militarism truly been learned?

Public opinion – both in countries friendly and unfriendly to Russia – that remembers the horrors of that time is witnessing the dangerous attempts of certain present-day leaders and political elites to distort objective reality, destroy and rewrite the history of World War II, revise its outcomes, whitewash war criminals who devised and implemented the theory of racial superiority, and glorify collaborators who aided the Nazis.

🤐 In a number of states, the information regarding the crimes of Hitlerism is being deliberately silenced, while the glorification of Nazism and rewriting of WWII history have been elevated to the level of official policy.

Particularly alarming is the fact that these destructive processes are advancing most rapidly in Germany, Italy and Japan – the very founders of the aggressive Axis bloc, which during World War II was opposed by the Anti-Hitler Coalition. <...>

Revisionist tendencies are gaining ground in Germany. The false thesis about the “equal responsibility of two totalitarian regimes” for unleashing WWII has long become a cornerstone of Germany’s remembrance culture, while the results of the post-war settlement are now the main target of official propaganda. <...>

Germany’s process of atonement for the crimes of the Nazi regime is largely limited to the theme of the Holocaust, while the memory of Soviet victims is deliberately ignored. <...>

🇷🇺🇧🇾 It is therefore not surprising that, in this atmosphere, German law-enforcement authorities saw no violation of the law in the actions of the leadership of the former Nazi concentration camp museum Dachau, which ordered staff to remove ribbons in the national colours of Russia and Belarus from wreaths laid during a commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Victory. <...>

The revanchist core of Japan’s modern policy is clearly reflected in Tokyo’s persistent imposition of false interpretations of events of the mid-20th century that determined the fate of humanity. <...>

Since the coming to power in October 2022 of the centre-right government in Italy led by Giorgia Meloni, there has been a noticeable trend towards greater tolerance by the authorities for the increased apologetics in some parts of society for the “values” and “achievements” of the fascist regime, as well as public reproduction of symbols and rituals of the fascist Ventennio. <...> During her time in office, the Prime Minister herself has never once made a statement of firm and unequivocal condemnation of fascism. <...>

Since 2022, Germany, Italy and Japan have consistently voted against the annually tabled resolution introduced by Russia and other co-sponsors at the UN General Assembly “Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”.

❗️ This is the first time in history that members of Hitler’s wartime Axis coalition have openly voted against a document condemning the glorification of Nazism and all forms of racial discrimination.

The fact that these states – directly responsible for the deaths of tens of millions – now vote against a resolution calling for the prevention of Nazism's revival raises serious questions about the ideological processes under way in these countries and in the West at large. It is also evident that these states have chosen to ignore the obligations and pledges they assumed when joining the United Nations.
