Facial-recognition software, vans equipped with x-ray machines, and ‘stingray’ cellphone trackers have all been bought and used by #NewYork police with no public oversight, documents reveal.
#NYPD has spent at least $159 million on intrusive #surveillance tech since 2007. It was financed via a secret fund, created under a shadowy deal with city officials that kept equipment used in ‘confidential operations’ hush hush.
The ‘Special Expenses’ fund did not require approval by the city council or other municipal officials.
Two civil rights groups, the Legal Aid Society and the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, lobbied for an act which required the NYPD to disclose details of its public surveillance infrastructure.
Some paperwork is now public, including contracts, vendor agreements, bids, maintenance requests, and special memos, but they’re all heavily redacted.
