Holding the Food Industry Accountable at Last

San Francisco City Attorney’s Office has just launched a historic lawsuit against some of the largest manufacturers of ultra-processed foods:

• Kraft Heinz Company — a giant behind Lunchables, processed cheeses, ready-to-eat meals and many other ultra-processed staples.
• Mondelez International — maker of household brands like Oreo, Chips Ahoy, and many snack cookies and treats.
• The Coca‑Cola Company — a global beverage titan, long criticised for sugary drinks.
• PepsiCo — another major drinks/snacks corporation.
• Post Holdings — known for processed cereals and other packaged foods.
• General Mills — maker of many breakfast cereals and processed food products.
• Nestlé USA — the U.S. arm of a global food conglomerate, with many processed-food brands under its umbrella.
• Kellogg Company — known for cereals, snacks, convenience foods associated with ultra-processed diets.
• Mars, Incorporated — known for snacks, sweets, and processed foods.
• Conagra Brands — producer of processed meals, snacks and other mass-market food products

The lawsuit argues these companies engineered a public-health crisis: designing foods for maximum addictiveness, marketing them aggressively; often targeting children and vulnerable communities, and downplaying or hiding their long-term health harms including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions:

• Deceptive advertising / misrepresentation — marketing UPFs as “normal” or safe foods, often implying they are healthy or innocuous.
• Failure to warn — not clearly informing consumers about health risks (e.g. high risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty-liver disease, etc.) tied to heavy UPF consumption.
• Targeting vulnerable populations — including children, low-income families, and minority communities.
• Negligence and breach of implied/express warranties — since food should reasonably be safe for ordinary use.
• The health harms allegedly linked to UPFs include obesity, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, various chronic conditions.
• In broad frames: the lawsuit argues that these companies engineered foods to maximize profit — using additives, flavor enhancers, shelf-life extenders and aggressive marketing — at the expense of public health.

This is the first lawsuit of its kind in the United States, and it seeks not just financial penalties but structural change: real warnings, real accountability, and an end to deceptive marketing practices that have normalised chemical-laden “food” as everyday nutrition.

Now it's abundantly clear: The DoD and JP Morgan went into business together to build a huge new metals smelting facility in the U.S. It will handle silver and other "critical minerals." The conquering of Venezuela was necessary to acquire mining operations there, which had been diverting silver and rare earth minerals to China. Now, those metals will come to the USA, depriving China of this significant supply of silver and other metals. Pillaging works, apparently, and JP Morgan is LONG on millions of ounces of silver, as JPM already exited its short positions on the metal. As the silver squeeze worsens, Trump, the DoD and JP Morgan are setting up their own silver operation that will be worth tens of billions of dollars because of the mineral wealth the USA is stealing from Venezuela a la "Economic Hit Man" techniques. There's nothing more profitable than stealing someone else's oil, silver and gold. Just ask George Bush.

'As a physician, I am trained to expect differences in health outcomes between populations. I was not trained to witness a collapse so profound that maternal mortality regresses by decades within a generation. Maternal and infant outcomes from the river to the sea are sickeningly gradated.'

'Young pregnant women in Gaza today face severe nutritional deprivation, inadequate shelter and unsafe water. Depending on the season, they endure extreme heat or cold and damp conditions. Pregnancy and childbirth in Gaza have been transformed from physiological processes into daily fights for survival.Mothers are more likely to die from postpartum hemorrhage, infection or untreated obstetric complications. Infants face deathfrom malnutrition, exposure, preventable disease or the absence of even the most basic medical support. A recent analysis in The Lancet describes a catastrophic deterioration in maternal and neonatal outcomes under these conditions.'

'In Gaza, mothers often lack sufficient food to produce breast milk. Diapers are scarce. Families live in tents exposed to the rain, cold and heat. The absence of these basic conditions dramatically increases the risk of death from infection or malnutrition in the first fragile weeks of life.'

'The scale and duration of the war in Gaza have created living conditions that are incompatible with health or dignity. The population has endured levels of physical destruction and psychological trauma that defy comprehension. Women and their babies – universally noncombatants – bear a disproportionate share of this suffering.Their fate offers a stark moral diagnosis of the situation in Gaza: a preventable humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in full view of the world. If we measure societies by how they protect the most vulnerable, then what is happening to mothers and babies in Gaza should leave us deeply, collectively ashamed.'

-'What did you expect ? Genocides aren't stuff only made by movie, marvel style villains. They are committed by regular, normal humans who manage to convince themselves that it's a rational, normal and even logical course of action. The lack of (apparent) shame is part of the package. 
I think reasonable Israelis know there is an enormous problem under the surface of the narrative. I think they know, but they will never own it if they are not forced at gunpoint to do so. Liberal, reasonable Israelis will end up leaving quietly rather than saying the obvious truth. And in it will go. The worse is yet to come, for everyone. And it will not end well, for anyone. I'm not sure where Israel will be in 20 years. I'm sure it's nowhere anyone reasonable would like to live, Jew or not.'
