About the Speaker: Dr. Niyousha Hosseinichimeh’s research focuses on developing and applying modeling and analytic methods to improve health and healthcare systems. She uses simulation models to advance understanding and decision making in complex dynamic systems. Her methodological contributions include (a) expanding calibration methods for parameter estimation of dynamic models and (b) developing techniques for group model building, the approach of simultaneous elicitation of expert knowledge and development of models in group settings. She has applied these methods in major national and local health problems including infant mortality and major depressive disorder. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, as well as foundations and state governments. She is an Associate Editor of the System Dynamics Review.

Abstract: Analyzing complex public health problems requires appropriate methods that can capture diverse, interconnected, and dynamic factors. System dynamics modeling is a method to incorporate such complexities. However, two major challenges exist: (1) elicit information about the structure of complex health systems form subject‑matter experts, (2) calibrate non‑linear dynamic models with few data points over time. New advances in group model building techniques and dynamic model calibration try to address these challenges. We report three projects that we have conducted in the domain of healthcare modeling over the past six years and reflect on how these methodological challenges are addressed in these cases. They include dynamic modeling of (1) major depressive disorder, (2) infant mortality, and (3) drunk driving. We discuss implications for modeling of complex health problems.
