Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR)

PhD position in hydrology at ETH and SLF

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The professorship of Hydrology and Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos and the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich quantifies the hazard potential and water availability in mountain regions under global change. The group Hydrology and Climate Impacts has strong expertise in water resources, extreme value analyses, statistical modelling, and climate impact assessments and is looking, from autumn or winter 2022, for a

PhD student in Hydrology (f/m/d, 4 years)

You will work in the project “Predicting floods and droughts under global change”, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Hydrological extremes can have particularly severe impacts if droughts and floods happen in areas with high human presence. To reduce the negative impacts of hydrologic extremes in such regulated basins, we need estimates of their magnitude and frequency under current and future climate conditions. Within this PhD project you will quantify the impacts of climate change on hydrologic extremes under natural and regulated conditions in the Alps using hydrological modeling and climate model simulations. You will publish your results in scientific journals and present them at international conferences. The work location will be at SLF in Davos (https://www.slf.ch/en/index.html) and you will obtain a PhD degree at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich (https://iac.ethz.ch/).

You hold a MSc degree in hydrology, environmental sciences, climate sciences, or a closely related field. We seek candidates that have previous experience with hydrological modelling, large datasets, and programming languages (e.g. Python, R).‘ Applications from enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who have very good oral and written communication skills in English are very welcome. You are motivated to work in an interdisciplinary and international working environment and you would enjoy living in a beautiful and varied mountain environment.

Please send your complete application (incl. an example of your own scientific writing) to Jasmine Zollinger, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents on our webpage (https://apply.refline.ch/273855/1359/pub/2/index.html). Applications via email will not be considered. Manuela Brunner (https://manuelabrunner.com/, phone +49 761 203 3509, e-mail manuela...@slf.ch) will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position. Formal review of applications will start on September 15th and continue until the position is filled.

🔔Postdoc position at University of Kansas in watershed modeling 🇺🇸
The University of Kansas is pleased to announce a postdoctoral research opportunity to contribute towards improving predictions of aquatic biological community responses to conservation actions in intensively managed agricultural watersheds. The postdoctoral researcher will work with the latest version of the Soil Water and Assessment Tool (SWAT+) to develop watershed models, incorporate new aquatic biogeochemical processes into the SWAT source code and identify regional differences in parameterization and sensitivity across the models. This position is part of a USDA-funded, multi-institutional project. The successful candidate must have appropriate work authorization and be physically present by the start date of employment. The postdoctoral position is full time for one year. To apply, submit requested application materials at https://employment.ku.edu/staff/23620BR. Application review begins November 1, 2022 and will continue until position is filled. KU is an EO/AAE, full policy http://policy.ku.edu/IOA/nondiscrimination.
