Argentines choose president today: What to watch
Argentines is to go to the polls on Sunday to choose a president they will entrust with bringing the economy back from the brink of disaster.
With inflation running at more than 130% a year, the currency depreciating and business activity in decline, voters have to decide who is best prepared to get the country back on track: libertarian outsider Javier Milei, pro-business leader Patricia Bullrich or Economy Minister Sergio Massa of the ruling Peronist party.
An outright victory by Milei would probably trigger another selloff in the peso as he’s promised to dollarize the country and close the central bank.
Following Milei's victory of the primary election, the government devalued the peso by 18%.
And now fears of another devaluation have grown, forcing businesses to suspend sales of everything from building materials to car parts and even toilet paper.
Fearing that their dollar deposits will not be guaranteed by the government, Argentines have withdrawn nearly $500 million from banks in the last week alone, according to the central bank.
Polls show that the ruling Peronist party could post its worst election results since 1983. However, Massa still has a fighting chance if he advances to the second round with Milei.
The polarization between the two may allow him to win over more centrist voters who are not comfortable with Milei's radical proposals.
