Sanders, the head of the British Army, will underline the need for the UK govt to “mobilise the nation” in the event of war with Russia in a speech on Wednesday.
He has been openly critical of servicemen cuts and is understood to want British men and women to be prepared for a call-up to fight, should the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalate to NATO involvement.
It was revealed earlier this month that American and European generals believe the UK is no longer a top-level fighting force – with analysts predicting the British Army could have fewer than 70k troops within two years if they continue to lose soldiers at their current rate.
