March 19, 1989: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak hoists the Egyptian flag in Taba in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, which was returned to Egypt by an international arbitration court in 1988 after 22 years of Israeli occupation. Since then, a “national holiday” has been held annually on March 19th in the Egyptian governorate of Janub Sina.
