I’ve always found it interesting how while the Germanic peoples lived in relatively humble dwellings, they lavishly decorated every inch of the small things; weapons, tools, armour, etc.
But, compared to civilizations such as Ancient Greece and Rome, who built massive feats of architecture, many of which still stand to this day, the Germanic peoples had very little peacetime.
While IE peoples such as the Romans managed to periodically subdue their enemies, the Germanic peoples were surrounded by enemies on all sides; the Romans, the Nomads, the Carolingians, and of course, rival tribes. In the case of the Migration Era, many of these peoples would also frequently be on the move.
And in these turbulent times, it would be these simple survival essentials; your knife, sword, shield, helmet, spear, axe, horse harness, wagon, tent, cloak pin, fire starter, etc. that would be your lifeline; and worthy of this adornment, as symbols of the resilience of your folk.
