1995 - Haemophilus Influenzae is the first bacterium genome sequenced.

In 1995, to demonstrate the new strategy of "shotgun" sequencing, Dr. J. Craig Venter and colleagues published the first completely sequenced genome of a self-replicating, free-living organism.

J. Craig Venter, born Oct. 14, 1946, sequenced Haemophilus influenzae & human genomes.

"In 2010, scientists at the J. Craig Venter Institute created the first synthetic genome and inserted it into an empty bacterial cell.
The resulting bacterium, named Mycoplasma laboratorium, could replicate and produce proteins".

He is known for leading the first draft sequence of the human genome.

In 2010: The J. Craig Venter Institute announced that they had successfully created a functional synthetic genome.

Scientists at the J. Craig Venter Institute created a living cell with a synthetic genome made from scratch in 2010, making it the first living cell on Earth in 3.5 billion years to not have a living.
