The global European bison population has rebounded to more than 9,000 animals in 2025, up from just 54 in zoos a century ago, thanks to reintroduction programs across 52 sites in eight countries. Belarus holds the largest free-roaming herd (about 1,237 bison, or 14% of the world total) mainly in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, aided by strong breeding, anti-poaching work, and habitat restoration. Cross-border efforts with Poland and Ukraine continue to boost genetic diversity, with a 10,000-animal global target set for 2030.

Similar growth has occurred among other major herbivores. In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, 2024–2025 reports show elk, deer, and moose populations largely stable or rising, with Washington’s elk herds increasing thanks to habitat improvements and regulated hunting. Alaska’s moose and caribou numbers have also climbed following targeted wolf culls since 2003, while Yellowstone’s elk herd has stabilized post-wolf reintroduction, contributing to broader ecosystem recovery documented in a 2024 Ecological Monographs study.
