Start with shotguns, most versatile for many scenarios.
The recoil can be heavy for some people.
Even so, everything can be achieved, with proper technique and practice.
Ammo: several types of loads available in shotgun cartridges. Average cost of ammo is relatively affordable compared to most other types of ammo (.22lr are cheapest, see further posts)
in some jurisdictions, it is legal to re-load your own cartridges.
LE use slug cartridges to break down door locks. Elephants buffalo bears can be stopped too.
Your mileage (effective distance) might vary…but this is likely to increase your chances of being the first to arrive at a “UFO” salvage site 😂
Vietnam war veterans have remarked that the natives were not afraid of m-16, the ammo went straight through and victim is usually able to recover. Shotguns in Vietnam caused the natives to run away or surrender…due to the unpredictable (but always much more lethal) type of cartridge.
shotguns loaded with cartridges using smaller shots (ball bearings, basically) are accepable and defensible (in most courts) for home intruder scenarios.
many gun enthusiasts even use the diminutive term “scattergun” to convey that the shotgun pellets are spread out…some people would call it “no need to aim”…most intruders/attackers know this to be the “nightmare scenario”. can you imagine how long it would take the ER surgeon to find+remove each projectile and patch up the arrested intruder ?

Warrior Poet Society channel is full of very well thought reviews of guns, with good humour.
I think Kyle Rittenhouse used a .22lr rifle, that was customised AR-15 style…but it is hard to come up with a proper verifiable reference to the exact calibre ammo used in his rifle. Smith&Wesson M&P15-22.

But this is the most overlooked gun, and is very capable of inflicting serious damage to any intruder/attacker. There is virtually no recoil.
Unfortunately, many school shootings in the USA involve kids using the “varmint gun” modified to look like an assault rifle. In contrast, gun rights advocates, will skirt this issue.
