Decide he murdered dad, they tell him dad is dead and they have evidence he did it.

17 hours of interrogation in which they brought in his dog and told him to say goodbye as it was being euthanised.

While curled up with the dog he decided the police's narrative about not remembering trauma must be right and he breaks down and confesses.

He then tried to kill himself in distress.

So they locked him up for 72 hours observation in a mental hospital.

Only, dad was fine. Even after they found out, they left him at the mental hospital believing that his dog was euthanised and that he had killed his father.

This ain't bad apples.
This is police.
