Progress update
I have set up an environment that allows me to analyze the native resolution of shows that are airing when I feed it a 1080p file.
It's not an exact science and some data is up to interpretation.
But with this info one can see that dragonmaid is airing at a higher native resolution.

Vertical = relative error
Horizontal = Resolution

image 1: a known 1080p native source
image 2: dragonmaid S2
image 3: boku no hero

The gradual dip you see relates to the image appearing more "correct" at the resolution it's being parsed at

The point that's the lowest on the graph could be considered the most correct resolution for the show

So if you check boku no hero, you can see for sure that the show is a 720p broadcast that's been upscaled to 1080p.

But with dragonmaid that dip isn't there. I've compared various different screens and the result remains the same. It's a natural decline.

Dragonmaid *might* be airing at 1080p, it might even be something around 900p. but it's not 720p.
After yesterdays investigation I decided to investigate further how I would go about improving a source image.

File without subs: Alteration
File with subs: Original

Through using a tool called vapoursynth I've written a noscript to re-encode episode files to give me a stronger outline on objects in a scene.

This is something I'll use on a case by case basis depending on the source image, as the result isn't guaranteed to be better than the original image.

I should also note that this (at least the way I've used it) isn't something you should do for watching an episode. The output that I desired was for screenshots. Not for a scene in motion. It does not look as good when viewed during playback.
I'll try to make some time next week for actually making stickers

My process is going to be a bit different this time around
My photoshop license finally expired and I'll be trying to use clip studio paint to do the background removal process
Stream somewhere in about 6 - 7 hours
Will be trying out clip studio paint to see how it holds up on my process
Stream will be on picarto.tv marked as for mature audiences. (So you need an account)

Picarto is used simply because it has better TOS for content potentially 18+

Trying to get the hang of CSP
At least 2 stickers by the end of the evening is the goal, more if things go well.
Stream ended quickly
I experimented with CSP and came to the conclusion that it's not suited for this type of work. It's less about lacking features but more about the usability of those features.
I won't be using CSP for the same reasons why I don't use GIMP
End result for now is 1 sticker that may or may not be redone because I'm not too happy with how CSP handles certain aspects of my processes.
In other words
Goal of 2 stickers not reached.
I'm going to investigate starting up my PS subnoscription again. There is just some work involved from my end to do that simply because my account was set in a different country and payment methods are different depending on where you are.

Thanks Adobe for being a necessary overpriced evil.

I'll be trying to go through newer episodes to see if there is any sticker material, I've fallen a bit behind.
I'm trying to avoid stickers that are duplicating reactions in the first pack, but at the same time some reactions look better in the new season over the ones I already had in the first pack.

I'll be comparing the native episode screenshots to the re-encode to see which works better, so don't expect any new files tonight. If you're lucky maybe.
Busy going through the older episodes again to get some more screenshots
It looks like this season has a bigger focus on a variety of characters than the last, so I'll try to get more screenshots outside of the main household.
If I'm not too busy tomorrow I'm going to start trying to restore this. Because I like suffering.
