گذشته ساده در زبان انگلیسی
برای ساخت این زمان، از حالت گذشته افعال استفاده می کنیم. توجه کنید افعال در انگلیسی سه شکل دارند: شکل ساده (که در حالت حال ساده استفاده می شود)، شکل گذشته (که اینجا با آن آشنا می شویم) و اسم مفعول که در ماضی نقلی استفاده می شود.
حالت گذشته افعال خود دو دسته هستند
1- گروهی که با قاعده هستند و فقط یک ed به انتهای آن اضافه می شود. مانند:
like / liked
want / wanted
travel / travelled
2- حالت بی قاعده که شکل فعل عوض می شود:
am, is / was
are / were
write / wrote
see / saw
go / went
get / got
think / thought
do / did

نگران حفظ کردن حالت گذشته افعال نباشید. داخل متن کم کم آنها را خودکار یاد می گیرید بدون اینکه متوجه شوید.
I was there.
من آنجا بودم.
They were there.
آنها آنجا بودند.
I did that.
من این کار را کردم.
I was angry because they were late.
من عصبانی بودم چون آنها دیر کردند.

وقتی در تعطیلات بودی هوا خوب بود؟
برای منفی کردن حالت گذشته از did not قبل از شکل ساده ی فعل استفاده می کنیم I did not like her. از او خوشم نیامد. Mike did not like her. مایک از او خوشش نیامد.[/su_note]

برای افعال to be از did استفاده نمی شود، مستقیما از not استفاده کنید: The film wasn’t (=was not) very good. I did not enjoy it much. فیلم خوب نبود. از آن زیاد لذت نبردم.

برای سوالی کردن حالت گذشته از فعل کمکی did و حالت ساده ی فعل استفاده می کنیم: Did you go there? Did he see you? آنجا رفتی؟ او تو را دید؟ Did you like her? از او خوشت آمد؟ Did Mike like her? مایک از او خوشش آمد؟ مجددا برای سوالی کردن افعال to be مستقیما از خود آن استفاده می شود نه did: Were you there? تو آنجا بودی؟
مثال ها:
Suicides liked the bridge, too.

کسانی که قصد خودکشی داشتند هم از پل خوششان می آمد.

I must say I liked my new look.
باید بگویم از ظاهر جدیدم خوشم آمد.

So you liked the place, then?
خوب پس از آنجا خوشت آمد؟

I liked the contemporary design.
از آن طراحی امروزی خوشم آمد.

Will
فعل کمکی برای نشان دادن انجام کاری در آینده
Oh, I’ve left the door open. I’ll (=I will) go and shut it.
اوه، در را باز گذاشته ام. می روم و آن را می بندم.
I’ll go out tonight.
امشب بیرون خواهم رفت.
| He will go out tonight.
امشب او بیرون خواهد رفت.
I will not go out tonight. I won’t (=will not) go out tonight.
امشب بیرون نخواهم رفت.

Shall
از Shall برای اول شخص (من و ما) کاربرد آن دقیقا مانند Will است: نشان دادن کاری در آینده. این فعل کمکی معمولا برای سوال کردن استفاده می شود نه جمله ی خبری.
Shall I open the window?
(می خواهی) پنجره را باز کنم؟
Shall we go?
برویم؟
Where shall we have lunch?
کجا ناهار بخوریم؟
I shall be late this evening. I will be late this evening.
امشب دیر می آیم.
We shall (or We will) probably go to France in June.
ژوئن احتمالا به فرانسه خواهیم رفت.
I shan’t (=shall not) be here tomorrow.
فردا اینجا نخواهم بود.
 
مقایسه ی will و shall در جمله سوالی:
Shall I shut the door? (= Do you want me to shut it?)
در را ببندم؟ (می خواهی من در را ببندم؟)
Will you shut the door? (= I want you to shut it)
می شود در را ببندی؟ (می خواهم تو در را ببندی.)
 

کلمه Shall برای غیر از I و We به معنی باید هم استفاده می شود: You shall go! تو باید بروی![/su_note]
 
مثال های بیشتر:
Marius turned his back to her and said, ‘Then I shall have to go away.’
ماریوس به او پشت کرد و گفت «پس من باید از اینجا بروم.»
Mary: What shall I do? Perhaps someone will let me sleep on their floor.
مری: چه کار کنم؟ شاید کسی بگذارد کف خانه شان بخوابم.
I am dying, I beg you to come. I shall die easier with your forgiveness.
