Calhoun himself saw the fate of the population of mice as a metaphor for the potential fate of humankind. He gave his claimed discoveries catchy names, the mice who forgot how to mate were “the beautiful ones” rats who crowded around water bottles were “social drinkers”, and the overall societal breakdown was the “behavioral sink” also characterized as "spiritual death". »
