Did you know that different crops ideally prefer specific types of soil to grow in? There are 6 basic types of soil:

Clay Soil: Heavy soil (>25% clay), very moisture retentive. High in nutrients.
Sandy Soil: Warm, light, dry, acidic. Low in nutrients.
Silt Soil: Light, moisture-retentive. Highly fertile.
Peat Soil: Very moisture-retentive. High in organic matter.
Chalk Soil: Varies from pure limestone to deep, moisture-retentive, alkaline clay.
Loam Soil: Fertile mixture of sand, silt & clay. Good water drainage.

Most vegetables and fruit crops prefer moisture-rich silty soil, while salad crops and legumes do well in well-drained peaty soil. What kind of soil do you see around you?
All these beautifully intelligent types of soil will soon become sand if we don't act now.

Soil organisms are essential for most of the ecosystem services provided by soils – from the provision of healthy food to carbon sequestration, soil biodiversity determines the main processes that make life possible on Earth, thanks to the multiple connections between above and belowground! 🐜🐞🪱🪲🐌🦫🦔🍄
