Near Lunderbjerg in Denmark, it's located one of the largest Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) projects in the world. Called Sunstore 3. The system consists in a pit thermal energy storage (PTES), a very large insulated pit filled with 60 thousand cubic meters of hot water that can store 5.4 GWh of thermal energy for several months.
The STES system is coupled with a large solar thermal plant composed of 37 thousand square meters of solar heater panels that use the sunlight to heat the water that is then stored in the water pit. Allowing solar energy captured in the summer to be used in the winter for heating.
The heat stored, combined with the heat produced by two bio oil boilers and the waste heat from natural gas generators and is fed into a district heating network. As implemented, 41% of the heat is supplied by thermal solar energy, and up to 70% with renewable energy in total.
