US fighter jets ‘extremely close encounter’ with Russian military aircraft over Mediterranean (reports)

US and Russian aircraft operating in the Mediterranean Sea reportedly flew ‘dangerously close’ to each other three times over the weekend, once within 5 feet, Defense officials said. (WSJ)

US military aircraft also escorted a Russian cargo plane and fighters across what America contends is an air exclusion zone in northeast Syria on Tuesday. (CNN)

From Moscow and Damascus' perspective, Russia’s military has been formally invited by Syria to operate in its airspace, but the US has not.

Israel Plans to Build Its First Quantum Computer

The Israel Innovation Authority will join forces with the Defense Ministry - to the tune of $62.2MN - to build the country’s first quantum computer. (JPost)

Although they admitted a possible need to rely on overseas input at first, the aim of the project is to use only Israeli-developed processors and technologies.

Israeli officials have called it an industry they "can't ignore" for "state security & technological superiority."

In a step toward offering an even better energy source, researchers at the University of Adelaide and their overseas partners have successfully proved the concept of superabsorption, the backbone for making quantum batteries a reality. Upon development, quantum batteries can significantly impact energy capture and storage in renewable energy and miniature electronic devices.

“Quantum batteries, which use quantum mechanical principles to enhance their capabilities, require less charging time the bigger they get,” said Dr James Q. Quach, Ramsay Fellow in the School of Physical Sciences and the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), University of Adelaide.

“It is theoretically possible that the charging power of quantum batteries increases faster than the size of the battery which could allow new ways to speed charging,” he said.

To prove the concept of superabsorption, the team built several wafer-like microcavities of different sizes that contained different numbers of organic molecules, each of which was charged using a laser.
