🛢 US will require valves on new pipelines in a new attempt to prevent disasters

US officials on Monday adopted a long-delayed rule aimed at reducing death and environmental damage from oil and gas pipeline ruptures, in response to repeated fatal explosions and massive spills in California, Michigan and other states.

The rule requires companies to install valves that can quickly shut off the flow of oil, natural gas or other hazardous fuels when pipelines rupture. It came in response to a massive gas explosion in San Bruno, California, that killed eight people in 2010, and to large oil spills that flowed into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River and Montana’s Yellowstone River, as well as many other spills.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg noted that more stringent regulations for the fossil fuel industry were needed because too many people have been harmed by pipeline failures.

The US threats to introduce sanctions on Russia in the aerospace sphere are not in line with NASA's statements that the organization is interested in maintaining dialogue with Russia, Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said.

"In fact, we are speaking about conscious attempts to limit the technological development of our country. It comes to the US Department of the Treasury's threats of sanctions for any cooperation with Russia in the aerospace sphere despite NASA's remarks on its high interest in maintaining dialogue," Antonov said in a statement, as quoted by the Embassy's Telegram channel.

"We call on the US authorities to stop waiving the sanctions stick, which hits the US itself and its allies," the ambassador added.

🚨 Washington OKs 1st statewide missing Indigenous people alert

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday signed into law a bill that creates a first-in-the-nation statewide alert system for missing Indigenous people, to help address a silent crisis that has plagued Indian Country in this state and nationwide.

The law sets up a system similar to Amber Alerts and so-called silver alerts, which are used respectively for missing children and vulnerable older adults in many states.

Besides notifying law enforcement when there’s a report of a missing Indigenous person, the new alert system will place messages on highway reader boards and on the radio and social media, and provide information to the news media.

🇺🇸 Pence unveils his ‘Freedom Agenda’ as he weighs 2024 run

Former US Vice President Mike Pence is offering his version of a “Freedom Agenda” platform for Republicans ahead of this year’s midterm elections, presenting a framework for GOP candidates — and possibly himself, for a 2024 presidential run.

Pence’s political platform brand, announced on Thursday, combines traditional Republican goals such as increasing American fossil fuel use, cutting taxes for the wealthy and corporations, and rolling back regulations, with priorities pursued by former President Donald Trump on issues like the environment, social services, trade and immigration.

Much of the 28-page plan reads like the platform of a presidential campaign, underscoring Pence’s ambitions and providing a road map that he is likely to pursue if he moves forward with a 2024 run.
