COVID-19 asylum limits at US-Mexico border to end May 23
The policy, known as the Title 42 authority, is named for a 1944 public health law to prevent communicable disease. The termination of the policy takes effect May 23 to give border officials time to prepare.
The government said it was already making plans to erect tents and take other steps to prepare for an expected influx of migrants. The policy went into effect under President Donald Trump in March 2020. Since then, migrants trying to enter the US have been expelled more than 1.7 million times.
An immediate end to the asylum ban could have sparked a rush on under-staffed border and immigration facilities. Homeland Security officials said this week that about 7,100 migrants were coming daily, compared with an average of about 5,900 a day in February.

🌱 New Mexico launches cannabis sales within Texans’ reach
New Mexico is bringing sales of recreational marijuana to the doorstep of Texas, the largest prohibition state, as the movement toward broad legalization sweeps up even more of the American West. As of Friday in New Mexico, anyone 21 and older can purchase up to 2 ounces (57 grams) of marijuana — enough to roll about 60 joints or cigarettes — or comparable amounts of marijuana liquid concentrates and edible treats.
Friday’s launch still represents a sea change for local law enforcement, taxation officials, commercial growers and residents who thought full-blown legal access to pot would never come. New Mexico is among 18 states and the District of Columbia that have legalized pot for recreational use, with implications for both cannabis tourism and conservative Texas, where legalization efforts have made little headway.

🚙 New vehicles must average 40 mpg by 2026, up from 28 mpg
New vehicles sold in the US will have to average at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026, up from about 28 mpg, under new federal rules unveiled Friday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its new fuel economy requirements will reduce gasoline consumption by more than 220 billion gallons over the life of vehicles.
Automakers are investing billions of dollars to develop and build electric vehicles, but say government support is needed to get people to buy them. The companies want government tax credits to reduce prices, as well as more money for EV charging stations to ease anxiety over running out of juice.

Amazon workers in NYC vote to unionize in historic labor win
Amazon workers in Staten Island, New York, voted to unionize on Friday, marking the first successful US organizing effort in the retail giant’s history and handing an unexpected win to a nascent group that fueled the union drive.
Warehouse workers cast 2,654 votes — or about 55% — in favor of a union, giving the fledgling Amazon Labor Union enough support to pull off a victory. Amazon workers are seeking longer breaks and an hourly wage of $30, up from a minimum of just over $18 per hour offered by the company.
The union campaigns come at a time of widespread labor unrest at many corporations. For instance, workers at more than 140 Starbucks locations around the country have requested union elections, and several of them have already been successful.

⚖️ Judge upholds Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking conviction
A US judge refused to throw out Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking conviction Friday, despite a juror’s failure to disclose he’d been a victim of childhood sexual abuse before the trial began.
The British socialite was convicted in December 2021 of helping American financier Jeffrey Epstein with sexually abusing multiple teenage girls.
US Judge Alison J. Nathan declined to order a new trial weeks after questioning the juror under oath in a New York courtroom about why he failed to disclose his personal history as an abuse survivor on a questionnaire during the jury selection process. The US attorney’s office declined comment Friday.

💰 The US created 431,000 jobs in March, missing forecasts as the economy faced even-higher inflation
The economy created 431,000 non-farm payrolls last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced Friday morning. The figure ell short of the median forecast for 490,000 new jobs from economists polled by Bloomberg.
The unemployment rate slid to 3.6% from 3.8%, according to the report. Economists had expected the rate to drop to 3.7%. Although the rate now sits just a hair above its record pre-crisis low of 3.5%, millions of Americans still haven't rejoined the workforce.
