🚨 Man arrested in Brooklyn subway shooting attack

The man arrested Wednesday in the shooting of 10 people on a Brooklyn subway was charged with a federal terrorism offense, a day after the attack on a crowded rush-hour train.

The US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, announced the charge against Frank R. James, 62, at an afternoon press conference. James was taken into custody in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood shortly beforehand. In recent months, James had railed in online videos about racism and violence in the US and about his experiences with mental health care in New York City. In some videos, he criticized Adams’ policies on mental health and subway safety.

The charge against him carries a sentence of up to life in prison and pertains to terrorist or other violent attacks against mass transit systems.

🎸 John Hinckley Jr, who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan, to perform sold-out concert in Brooklyn

The man who tried to assassinate former President Ronald Reagan in 1981, will perform a concert in New York this summer. Hinckley, 66, announced his show on Saturday, tweeting that he was "very excited" to perform on 8 July at the Market Hotel in Brooklyn.

Hinckley spent 35 years in a psychiatric facility after he tried to kill Mr Reagan as he left the Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. During that time he was diagnosed with narcissistic and schizoid personality disorders.

In 2020, Hinckley was cleared to begin producing music under his own name. Since then, he has utilized streaming sites and video platforms like YouTube to share his music. In September 2021, Hinckley was granted unconditional release, freeing him from various court-ordered restrictions and allowing him to move about without supervision.

🚇 Anxieties resurface as gunfire erupts on NYC subway

As the year began, New Yorkers shuddered at a subway crime straight out of urban nightmares. The city’s new mayor vowed to “make sure New Yorkers feel safe in our subway system.”

Police and security officials have made many attempts to harden the city against such attacks, putting officers on trains and platforms, installing cameras and even doing rare spot checks for weapons on passengers entering some stations.

Yet the sprawling system, with nearly 500 stations, largely remains like the city streets themselves: too big to guard and too busy to completely secure. On Monday, estimated ridership was 3.1 million, according to the MTA, which operates the system. After the Sept. 11 terror attacks, New Yorkers learned to live with the worry that the subways or other parts of the city could be a terror target.

23 injured in Texas storms; more tornadoes forecast in US

The storms caused widespread damage Tuesday in Salado, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Austin, Texas. Bell County Judge David Blackburn said 23 people were injured, one of them critically. Twelve of the injured were taken to hospitals.

Tornadoes were also spotted Tuesday in Iowa, but there were no reports of serious injuries. In Lincoln, Nebraska, powerful wind gusts knocked down tree limbs and caused some roof damage. More tornadoes were in the forecast Wednesday for parts of the mid-South and in the Mississippi River Valley. Hurricane-force winds, intense tornadoes and large hail were possible in Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi, Indiana, Louisiana and Alabama, forecasters said.

A blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service remained in effect through Thursday for most of western and central North Dakota, where up to 2 feet (60 centimeters) of snow was expected.

🚛 Texas keeping most truck inspections despite border gridlock

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday defied intensifying pressure over his new border policy that has gridlocked trucks entering the US and shut down some of the world’s busiest trade bridges as the Mexican government, businesses and even some allies urge him to relent.

The governor has ordered that commercial trucks from Mexico undergo extra inspections as part of a fight with the Biden administration over immigration practices.

The agency said it had inspected more than 3,400 commercial vehicles and placed more than 800 “out of service” for violations that included defective brakes, tires and lighting. It made no mention of whether the inspections turned up migrants or drugs.

Bipartisan push on mental health crisis that COVID worsened

A major effort to overhaul care for people in the United States with mental health and drug problems is gaining traction as Congress and the Biden administration work on overlapping plans to address concerns across dividing lines of politics, geography and race.

The US was already in a mental health crisis, with suicide rates climbing and chronic problems accessing treatment. The opioid epidemic had a firm grip on cities and small towns. An analysis of government data found that about 4 in 10 adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression in the first year of the pandemic, compared with about 1 in 10 before that. More than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses from May 2020 to April 2021, a record for lethality.

Many Democrats would like to spell out mental health coverage requirements for private health insurance. But Republicans do not support new mandates.

The mask mandate for air travel and public transportation has been extended once again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. The mandate, which was set to expire on April 18th, will be extended another two weeks as officials continue to monitor the number of COVID-19 cases across the country.

All airline passengers and public transportation riders will be required to wear a face covering at least through May 3rd after the Transportation Security Administration told the CDC they would be extending the mandate.

📺 The streaming service formerly known as IMDb TV is rebranding to ‘Amazon Freevee’

After launching as “IMDb Freedive” back in 2019, IMDb TV quickly faded into the background of the ongoing streaming wars that parent company Amazon had already established a respectable foothold in. While that initial rebrand never quite managed to put the fledgling platform and its content on the map, Amazon’s just announced its plan to reintroduce the streamer yet again under new branding ahead of a massive content push.

Going forward, IMDb TV will be known as “Amazon Freevee,” a name meant to emphasize that the ad-supported platform is free to viewers. It’s certainly possible that the third time will be the charm for Amazon Freevee, but at this mature and intense stage of the larger streaming game, a wealth of content doesn’t necessarily ensure success.
