The Justice Department said it will not appeal a federal district judge’s ruling that ended the nation’s federal mask mandate on public transit unless the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes the requirement is still necessary.
Major airlines and airports in places like Dallas, Atlanta, and Los Angeles quickly switched to a mask-optional policy. New York City, Chicago and Connecticut, however, continued to require masks for travelers. Lyft and Uber announced on their websites that masks will now be optional while riding or driving. Even Walt Disney World in Florida announced it was lifting its mask requirement for its monorail and buses.
President Joe Biden went all-in on flexibility when asked if Americans should mask up on planes.

An Arizona wildfire doubled in size overnight into Wednesday, a day after heavy winds kicked up a towering wall of flames outside a northern Arizona tourist and college town, ripping through two dozen structures and sending residents of more than 700 homes scrambling to flee.
Flames as high as 100 feet (30 meters) on raced through an area of scattered homes, dry grass and Ponderosa pine trees in a rural area on the outskirts of Flagstaff as gusts of up to 50 mph (80 kph) pushed the blaze over a major highway.
Coconino County officials said during a news conference that 766 homes and 1,000 animals had been evacuated. About 200 firefighters were battling the flames, but more are expected as a top-level national management team takes over later this week.

US Capitol Police have ordered the evacuation of the Capitol complex, saying they are “tracking an aircraft that poses a probable threat.” The alert was sent to congressional staffers Wednesday evening.
UPD: the evacuation was prompted by a single engine aircraft with parachutists participating in a Washington Nationals baseball game, CNN reported, citing two people directly familiar with the matter.

The former first lady’s June 13 remarks to When We All Vote’s inaugural Culture of Democracy Summit in Los Angeles will be her first in-person appearance before a large audience since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her last big in-person appearance before the pandemic was a February 2020 conversation with Oprah Winfrey that was part of a wellness tour by the former TV talk show host. Mrs. Obama isolated during the pandemic and, apart from her book tour, has kept a relatively low profile since leaving the White House. She appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show this week.

Tesla earned over $3 billion in profit in the first quarter of 2022
Tesla reported that it earned a $3.3 billion profit in the first quarter of 2022. Tesla turned that profit on just over $18.7 billion in revenue, the company announced. That represents an 81 percent increase year over year, compared to $10.4 billion in revenue in Q1 2021.
The company logged $679 million in emission credit sales to other automakers, compared to $314 million in credit sales in Q4 2021. The company generates this revenue by selling these credits to automakers that make fewer “clean” vehicles than are required by the US government and the European Union.
The company says it started production in Berlin last month, and that it started Model Y deliveries from Texas in April. Musk also predicted on the earnings call that the company would be able to ramp up production and make 1.5 million cars this year.

An Apple retail store in Atlanta has filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board. The workers at the Cumberland Mall store, which includes salespeople, technicians, creatives, and operations specialists, would be represented by the Communications Workers of America. More than 70 percent of the group of about 100 eligible workers signed the union authorization cards, the minimum required is 30 percent.
The Atlanta workers said that while they provide critical sales and services to the company, Apple doesn’t provide cost-of-living raises or access to equitable stock options. The workers are part of a larger movement among retail employees who felt exploited during the pandemic by corporations that saw huge financial windfalls.
