📩👀 On Wednesday, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai demanding answers in answer to a recent study that found the tech giant's email spam filtering algorithms exhibited political bias in 2020.

"New research reveals that your company makes it much harder for Republicans to reach their supporters even while your company makes it very easy for Democrats to reach theirs," Hawley said, adding that the internet plays a crucial role for political campaigns to reach their voters.

"We further observe that Gmail marks a significantly higher percentage (67.6%) of emails from the right as spam compared to the emails from left (just 8.2%)" researchers wrote. "Gmail marked 59.3% more emails from the right candidates as spam compared to the left candidates."

He also demanded to know why Google's filtering algorithm is more pronounced than other email apps.

😳💦As water levels in the state of California approach record lows. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) announced a water emergency this morning and ordered restrictions to reduce nonessential water use in parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties.

The water district attributed the emergency declaration to its “reliance” on “severely limited” water supplies in Northern California, which is also enduring extreme drought. It comes as the state has experienced a lack of precipitation and abnormally high temperatures in recent years.

The move includes the unprecedented measure of restricting outdoor watering to one day a week for about a third of the region.

📣🔷Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina seems to have violated federal conflict-of-interest law by failing to report his stake in a cryptocurrency named for the anti-Joe Biden slogan "Let's Go, Brandon."

By law, members of Congress must quickly and publicly report their crypto purchases in certified congressional documents, known as periodic transaction reports.

"All financial disclosure filings must disclose ownership interests of virtual currency"
worth more than $1,000 and "purchases, sales or exchanges of cryptocurrencies," the House Committee on Ethics wrote in a 2018 memorandum to lawmakers and congressional staffers.

The purchase appears to have happened in late December, according to Cawthorn's Instagram profile.

🔻💸The Trump administration approved a $700 million pandemic loan earmarked for national security to a trucking company despite DOD objections, a new report says

The loans to YRC Worldwide Inc., now called Yellow Corporation,
violated stipulations in the CARES Act, and senior Trump officials – "potentially including the president" – were involved in getting the loan approved, Democrats on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis said in a press release.

"Today's Select Subcommittee staff report reveals yet another example of the Trump Administration disregarding their obligation to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars," Chairman James Clyburn said in the press release.
