A tornado that barreled through parts of Kansas destroyed or damaged dozens of homes and buildings, injured several people and left more than 6,500 people without power, officials said Saturday. Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell said during a news conference early Saturday morning that 50 to 100 buildings were damaged in Sedgwick County, though it was not immediately known how many buildings were damaged in Andover.

In Sedgwick County, three people were injured, including one woman who suffered serious injuries. In addition to the tornadoes, large hail was reported in several towns across the Plains. 🚰 Vegas water intake now visible at drought-stricken Lake Mead

A massive drought-starved reservoir on the Colorado River has become so depleted that Las Vegas now is pumping water from deeper within Lake Mead where other states downstream don’t have access. The Southern Nevada Water Authority announced this week that its Low Lake Level Pumping Station is operational.

At Lake Mead, the new pumps are fed by an intake drilled nearer to the bottom of the lake and completed in 2020 to ensure the ability to continue to draw water for Las Vegas, its casinos, suburbs and 2.4 million residents and 40 million tourists per year.

Lake Mead and Lake Powell upstream are the largest human-made reservoirs in the US, part of a system that provides water to more than 40 million people, tribes, agriculture and industry in 7 states.

🚀 SpaceX's Texas expansion plans hit by a delay over environmental concerns

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has delayed completing an environmental review of SpaceX's new launch site in Texas for the fourth time in five months. SpaceX wants to expand Starbase site in Boca Chica, Texas by adding a second launch and landing pad. The company can only begin orbital launches of its huge Starship rocket once the FAA's assessment is complete.

The FAA now expects to release its review, called a Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA), on May 31. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in February he believed Starship is likely to launch into orbit for the first time this year

🏙 New York lawmakers want to limit warehouse productivity quotas

New York State Senator Jessica Ramos and Assembly Member Latoya Joyner have introduced a new bill meant to limit production quotas for warehouse workers. The bill, called the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, takes aim at Amazon's labor practices. It expands upon and strengthens the language of a similar bill in California that was signed into law back in 2021, making the state the first in the US to have legislation that regulates warehouse quotas.

Amazon made it to the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health's most dangerous workplaces in the US for the third time this year. The advocacy group included Amazon for having an injury rate more than double the industry average, and highlighted the deaths that took place in its facility in Bessemer, Alabama.

🎓 The White House is considering excluding high earners from being eligible for student-loan relief

Officials are thinking about ways to write off student loans, as President Biden indicated that he is considering waiving the debt. Top Biden aides are looking at capping the relief to people earning less than $125,000 to $150,000, or $250,000 to $300,000 for couples that file joint taxes. But they said that no final decision has been made on the plans.

The US administration is discussing the amount that will be cut from student-loan debt, but this could be at least $10,000 for eligible individuals. Biden has taken a number of actions since taking office to help Americans who have mounting student loan debts totalling $1.7 trillion.

🗣 President Biden busted out his comedy chops during the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and his jokes were kinda hit or miss, but he took his shots regardless. Joe acknowledging the "Let's go Brandon" gag, sort of embracing it. He ended with a more serious note, saying America is "not a reality show,”.

♻️ California takes on Big Plastic over recycling myths

California will investigate whether fossil fuel companies have broken the law by perpetuating myths about plastic recycling, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced.

The investigation marks a fresh attempt to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for downplaying the harm their products inflict on the planet. The reality is that the vast majority of plastic, more than 90 percent of all plastic ever made, never gets recycled.

Plastic is actually difficult to recycle and degrades each time it gets rehashed, which is one reason why it’s unlikely your plastic bottle will become another bottle. The state issued its first subpoena to ExxonMobil, one of the world’s biggest plastic producers. Similar lawsuits are still making their way through court.
