🔥 Firefighters battling New Mexico blaze brace for wind

Over 1,000 firefighters backed by bulldozers and aircraft battled the largest active wildfire in the US, after strong winds had pushed it across some containment lines and closer to a small city in northern New Mexico.

More extreme fire danger was forecast for Sunday for parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, according to the National Weather Service. The fires are burning unusually hot and fast for this time of year, especially in the Southwest, where experts said some timber in the region is drier than kiln-dried wood.

National forests across Arizona announced they would impose fire restrictions starting next Thursday that limit campfires to developed recreation sites and restrict smoking to inside vehicles, other enclosed spaces and to the recreation sites.

📈 Warren Buffett tells shareholders about spending $51 billion

Warren Buffett gave Berkshire Hathaway investors a few details Saturday about how he spent more than $50 billion earlier this year and again reassured them that the company he built will endure long after the 91-year-old billionaire is gone. Berkshire revealed in its earnings report Saturday morning that its mountain of cash shrank to $106 billion in the first quarter.

Tens of thousands of investors packed an Omaha arena Saturday to listen to Buffett and Berkshire’s vice chairmen answer questions at Berkshire’s annual meeting that was back in person for the first time since the pandemic began, but the turnout was likely smaller than when it used to regularly attract more than 40,000.

In response to concerns about the current high inflation, Buffett told investors that the best thing they could do is invest in themselves so that someone will always want to pay them for their services regardless of how much a dollar is worth.

📬 Activists sue USPS over purchase of gas-powered mail trucks

The US Postal Service is facing more than just stern warnings over its decision to buy mostly gas-powered mail delivery trucks. Environmental activist groups (including the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club) and 16 states have filed lawsuits in California and New York State to challenge the Postal Service's Next Generation Delivery Vehicle purchasing decision.

The USPS allegedly violated the National Environmental Policy Act by committing to buy 165,000 delivery vehicles (just 10 percent of them electric) without first conducting a "lawful" environmental review. Unlike many government agencies, the Postal Service is legally required to be self-sufficient and can't request government help to tackle deficits and debts.

🚫 Amazon ends paid COVID-19 leave policy for workers

As of May 2nd, Amazon will no longer offer paid time off for workers who test positive for COVID-19. Starting Monday, the company will instead grant frontline staff up to five days of unpaid leave, with the option for workers to use their accrued sick time if needed.

At the same time, the company will end its vaccine incentive program. The initiative saw Amazon pay workers $40 for every COVID-19 vaccine dose they went out to get.

Amazon’s updated COVID-19 policies will go into effect the same day we’ll find out if workers at the company’s LDJ5 warehouse in Staten Island voted to unionize.

💰 Elon Musk reportedly wants to charge for tweet embeds

Musk has floated the idea of charging users to embed or quote tweets from verified accounts, but that wouldn't stop anyone from simply screenshotting a tweet and using that instead.

In addition, Musk has mentioned other ways of improving Twitter's bottom line but hasn't made firm commitments on those as yet. He has suggested making changes to the Twitter Blue service to make it more appealing to potential subscribers.

Musk has publicly mused about getting rid of salaries for board directors, which would save the company around $3 million per year. Twitter's potential new owner is also said to have plans to replace CEO Parag Agrawal, who took the reins from Jack Dorsey in November.

🪙 Telegram now lets users send cryptocurrency through TON blockchain spinoff

Telegram now lets users send Toncoin, the cryptocurrency built off of Telegram’s abandoned blockchain effort, directly from chats within the messaging app. In 2020, Telegram shut down its own cryptocurrency operation after facing pressure from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Even after Telegram abandoned the TON project, a group of developers kept it afloat, renaming it The Open Network and rebranding Gram as Toncoin. TON is still years ahead of everything else in the blockchain realm.” Earlier this month, the TON Foundation managed to raise $1 billion in donations.

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban's name has been added to Myrotvorets ("Peacekeeper"), a notorious Ukrainian website publishing personal information about supposed "enemies of Ukraine" curated by the Security Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

He's listed there as an "accomplice to Russian authorities' crimes against Ukraine and its citizens".

Orban has yet to react to the listing, but former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev remarked that Kiev has started adding European leaders to the infamous database simply because they refuse to bow to pressure and cough up cash Ukraine wants so desperately.

A number of people, whose names once appeared on the site, were killed. Oles Buzina, a prominent Ukrainian journalist, and former Rada lawmaker Oleg Kalashnikov were among them. Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli, who was blacklisted too, was killed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the Donbass war in 2014
