⚖️ Lawmakers in 19 states want legal refuge for trans youth
Democratic lawmakers in more than a dozen states are following California’s lead in seeking to offer legal refuge to displaced transgender youth and their families. The coordinated effort being announced Tuesday by the LGBTQ Victory Institute and other advocates comes in response to recent actions taken in conservative states.
Lawmakers in both Minnesota and New York recently filed refuge state legislation modeled after the bill proposed in March by state Sen. Scott Wiener in California. Democrats in 16 other states plan to follow suit, though about half of their legislatures are out of session or not currently accepting new bills.
Wiener said it is despicable that any family would have to consider moving to a new state to protect a child, but if that happens, he hopes as many states as possible will welcome them.

💵 Trump appeal: $10,000 fine in record search ‘unconscionable’
In a court appeal, a lawyer for former US President Donald Trump said Monday it is “unconscionable and indefensible” for the ex-commander in chief to be held in contempt and fined $10,000 a day for failing to turn over documents he doesn’t possess.
The arguments were submitted a week after State Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron in Manhattan said Trump and his lawyers had failed to show they conducted a proper search for records sought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, in a civil probe of his business dealings. Trump, a Republican, has been fighting James in court over her investigation, which he has called a politically motivated “witch hunt.”
James said her investigation has found evidence that Trump may have misstated the value of assets like skyscrapers and golf courses on financial statements for over a decade.

💉 Pfizer hopes to submit little-kid vaccine data by early June
Pfizer now hopes to tell US regulators how well its COVID-19 vaccine works in the littlest kids by late May or early June.
Pfizer is testing three extra-small doses of its vaccine in children under 5 after two shots didn’t prove quite strong enough. Initial results had been expected last month but the company laid out the latest timeline Tuesday during its discussion of quarterly financial results.
Currently in the US, only children ages 5 or older can be vaccinated, using Pfizer’s vaccine, leaving 18 million younger tots unprotected. Rival Moderna hopes to be the first to offer vaccinations for the youngest children. Last week, it filed with the Food and Drug Administration data it hopes will prove two of its low-dose shots work in children younger than 5.
