📈 How higher Fed rates stand to affect Americans’ finances

Record-low mortgages below 3%, reached last year, are long gone. Credit card rates will likely rise. So will the cost of an auto loan. Savers may finally receive a yield high enough to top inflation.

The substantial half-point hike in its benchmark short-term rate that the Federal Reserve announced Wednesday won’t, by itself, have much immediate effect on most Americans’ finances. But additional large hikes are expected to be announced at the Fed’s next two meetings, in June and July, and economists and investors foresee the fastest pace of rate increases since 1989.

As a consequence, mortgage rates have jumped 2 full percentage points just since the year began, to 5.1% on average for a 30-year fixed mortgage

🏦 California moves to embrace cryptocurrency

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order for state agencies to move in tandem with the federal government to craft regulations for digital currencies. It also calls for officials to explore incorporating broader blockchain computer coding into the government operations of the state where much of the world’s technological innovation is born.

Newsom’s order says the state — home to Silicon Valley and financial innovators like PayPal and Square — should be out front in figuring out how to adapt to new technologies. California has about 39 million residents and its economy is more than $3.1 trillion, larger on its own as a US state than the United Kingdom and India. Newsom’s order directs a separate agency to solicit proposals for how best to use blockchain to help the state and the public.

Intuit to pay $141M settlement over ‘free’ TurboTax ads

The company behind the TurboTax tax-filing program will pay $141 million to customers across the United States who were deceived by misleading promises of free tax-filing services, New York’s attorney general announced Wednesday.

Under the terms of a settlement signed by the attorneys general of all 50 states, Mountain View, California-based Intuit Inc. will suspend TurboTax’s “free, free, free” ad campaign and pay restitution to nearly 4.4 million taxpayers, New York Attorney General Letitia James said.

James said her investigation into Intuit was sparked by a 2019 ProPublica report that found the company was using deceptive tactics to steer low-income tax filers away from the federally supported free services for which they qualified — and toward its own commercial products, instead.

Education Department forgives loans of more than 110,000 people, Teases More on the Way

Temporary changes to the troubled Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program have resulted in more than 110,000 people with student debt getting around $6.8 billion in relief. While the defraud forgiveness is welcome, 45 million Americans still currently carry the burden of student loan debt totaling close to $1.7 trillion. Most borrowers hold something between $25,000 and $50,000 of debt

Biden confirmed that he would have an announcement on the cancellation of student debt within the coming weeks, and confirmed that whatever debt would be canceled, it would be well below the $50,000 mark. As plans continue to formulate regarding student loan forgiveness, President Biden is considering an income cap of less than $125,000 a year.

🚫 Oklahoma joins Texas in offering glimpse of 'post-Roe' world

Oklahoma joined Texas this week after signing into law a bill that makes performing an abortion a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years.

Signed Tuesday by Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, the measure prohibits doctors from performing an abortion after fetal activity is detected in the embryo, which experts say is typically after about six weeks and before many women even know they are pregnant.

Abortion providers in Oklahoma said they are prepared for the law to take effect and have been helping women get appointments at clinics in neighboring states.

🔥 Fire crews take stand against destructive New Mexico blaze

Like a game of chess, fire bosses were busy planning their next move and looking for spots where they could steal fuel ahead of the fire, starving it of more timber and brush.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham h
as requested a presidential disaster declaration, saying she hoped it would bring financial help for recovery efforts. That tally of homes destroyed by the fire stands around 170, but the governor said that number would likely increase when it’s safe enough for officials to survey the damage.

The fire grew overnight to 250 square miles (647 square kilometers), with containment stuck at 20% of its perimeter. Strong winds were expected to blow the fire Wednesday toward Las Vegas. Las Vegas Mayor Louie Trujillo said the heavy smoke and noise from aircraft battling the fire were horrifying at times but he sought to assure residents that crews were working tirelessly.
