🇧🇷😰Deforestation detected in the Brazilian Amazon broke all records for April, which followed similar new records set in January and February, replicating a worrisome uptick in destruction in a state deep within the rainforest.

“The April number is terrifying. Due to the rain, it is traditionally a month with less deforestation,” Suely Araújo, senior public policy specialist at the Climate Observatory.

Satellite alerts of deforestation corresponded to more than 1,000 square kilometers (nearly 400 square miles), the highest figure for that month in seven years of record-keeping and 74% more than the same month in 2021, which was the prior record.

⚽️💰Chelsea Football Club on Saturday confirmed its new owner is a consortium led by Todd Boehly, an American billionaire investor and part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal was closed for £4.25 billion ($5.2 billion), though the purchase is yet to be approved by the UK government and the Premier League.

The high price, one of the highest that has ever been paid for a professional sports team, follows a bidding war that went on for nearly two months.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich owned the club for 19 years before putting it up for sale this March amid his alleged ties to Russia's Vladimir Putin. The English Premier League team said it had "agreed on terms," but exact details of the sale, which is expected to be completed by the end of May, would come later.

☕️👀Over 500 kg (1,102 lb) of cocaine estimated to be worth more than 50 million Swiss francs ($50.65 million) have been found in a container of coffee bean bags for Nestle's (NESN.S) Nespresso factory in Romont in western Switzerland, the cantonal police said on Thursday.

Police were informed on Monday night by Nespresso that staff had found an undefined white substance while unloading bags of coffee beans that had just arrived from Brazil, the police said in a statement. Analyses showed the substance was cocaine. "The substance in question did not come into contact with any of our products or production equipment used to make our products," Nespresso said in an emailed statement.

🇫🇷French President Emmanuel Macron was sworn into office for a second term on Saturday after his election victory over far-right rival Marine Le Pen. In his short speech to nearly 500 invited guests, the president spoke of the need to innovate at a time of unprecedented challenges for the world.

"We will take action relentlessly with a goal, which is to be a more independent nation, to live better, and to build our own French and European responses to the century's challenges," Macron said.

Macron answered criticism from many voters, who say he came across as out of touch and arrogant during his first term. He promised to act with "respect" and "consideration." He also vowed to "build a planet that is more livable, a France that is more alive and a stronger France."

‼️🎥A shocking video was captured during a robbery at the MyEyeDr store in Alexandria. Four masked thieves broke display cases, grabbed merchandise, and then ran off in minutes - not with jewelry but brand-name eyeglasses.

"And then I kind of, I don't know, instinctively kind of also was like, 'Okay, the police are on their way...and I think it kind of worked," said an employer of the store.

This is not the first-time thieves have gone after eyeglasses. Since the end of last year, police have been looking into a half dozen similar crimes. Starting with a Bethesda LensCrafters back in December, police say thieves have hit eyeglass stores in Chevy Chase, Georgetown, Arlington, and McClean.

🔎Last Friday an official with the National Labor Relations Board filed a wide-ranging complaint accusing the coffee chain Starbucks of violating workers’ rights.

“Starbucks has been saying that no union-busting ever occurred in Buffalo. Today, the NLRB sets the record straight,” the campaign said in a statement Friday. “The complaint confirms the extent and depravity of Starbucks" conduct in Western New York for the better part of a year.

The coffee store committed a host of labor law violations by terminating six pro-union workers, disciplining and surveilling others, closing stores, and changing work policies in the course of its battle with an organizing campaign, according to a complaint filed by labor officials.

💡🔌 As California forges ahead with its pledge to obtain all its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045, energy officials warned the state's electrical grid could prove unable to keep the lights on through the end of the year if heatwaves, wildfires, or other extreme events put too much strain on energy infrastructure.

The update by leaders from three state agencies and the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom comes as California faces a number of challenges to its ambitious transition away from fossil fuels and looks to avoid a repeat of the rolling blackouts which plagued the state during a 2020 heatwave, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

Mark Rothleder, chief operating officer at the California ISO grid, cautioned that "we need to make sure that we have sufficient new resources in place and operational before we let some of these retirements go," said. "Otherwise, we are putting ourselves potentially at risk of having insufficient capacity."
