On Wednesday, Sullivan met with Russian officials to discuss a narrow set of bilateral issues, including the operation of the US embassy in the country, according to the State Department.
"We think it is important that the United States continues to have an embassy here in Moscow. We have to be engaged with the Foreign Ministry," Sullivan told CNN.
The diplomat also stressed that diplomats from both sides are trying to keep relations at a professional level, despite differences.

The plant could grow to include 8,500 employees and would be built on a 2,200-acre (890-hectare) site that state and local governments own near the hamlet of Ellabell, Georgia. Wildfires are on a furious pace early this year — from a California hilltop where mansions with multimillion-dollar Pacific Ocean views were torched to remote New Mexico mountains charred by a month-old monster blaze. As the unstoppable northern New Mexico wildfire chewed through more dense forest Thursday, firefighters in the coastal community of Laguna Niguel doused charred and smoldering remains of 20 large homes that quickly went up in flames and forced a frantic evacuation.
The New Mexico fire has burned through mostly rural areas that include a mix of scattered ranch homes, historic Hispanic villages that date back centuries and high-dollar summer cabins. The celestial action unfolds Sunday night into early Monday morning, with the moon bathed in the reflected red and orange hues of Earth’s sunsets and sunrises for about 1.5 hours, one of the longest totalities of the decade. It will be the first so-called 'blood moon' in a year.
NASA will provide a livestream of the eclipse from various locations; so will the Slooh network of observatories. There’ll be another lengthy total lunar eclipse in November, with Africa and Europe lucking out again, but not the Americas. Then the next one isn’t until 2025.
