🔻On Sunday, the parents of the Buffalo shooting suspect, Payton Gendron, were interviewed by FBI agents, police said. The Buffalo police commissioner and FBI agents with New York State troopers went to Mr. Gendron’s family home.

The police commissioner believed they were “absolutely distraught and devastated” by their son’s arrest and the shooting at Tops Friendly Market on Saturday, Fox News reported.

Police believe the suspected gunman acted alone when he shot ten people dead at a Buffalo-area supermarket, roughly 200 miles away from his home in Conklin, New York. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty, while investigators have released details about his alleged motives for the attack in the predominantly Black neighborhood.

🔎Former Haitian Senator, Joseph Joel John, was extradited from Jamaica to the United States on Friday to face criminal charges in the Southern District of Florida related to his alleged involvement in the assassination of the former President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, on July 7, 2021.

John is charged with conspiring to commit murder or kidnapping outside the United States and providing material support resulting in death, knowing or intending that such material support would be used to prepare for or carry out the conspiracy to kill or kidnap.

John and others – including approximately 20 Colombian citizens and several dual Haitian-American citizens – participated in a plot to kidnap or kill the Haitian President. As alleged, John was present as a co-conspirator (“Co-Conspirator #1”). His initial federal court appearance was today at 2:00 p.m. before United States Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis, who sits in Miami.

🇺🇸The US Air Force said it conducted a successful test of a hypersonic weapon off the California coast.

"[A] B-52H Stratofortress successfully released an AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon, or ARRW, off the Southern California coast, May 14. Following separation from the aircraft, the ARRW’s booster ignited and burned for expected duration, achieving hypersonic speeds five times greater than the speed of sound," the Air Force said in a statement.

🗽New York City Mayor Eric Adams will launch new pilot programs for students with dyslexia at two public schools and increased literacy screenings at scores of others the latest elements of his plan to help the city’s struggling readers.

“We are going to have the largest, most comprehensive approach to supporting students with dyslexia in the country,” said Mayor Eric Adams last week.

Officials also plan to train all teachers and will create a new dyslexia task force. School leaders are requiring school principals to pivot to a phonics-based literacy curriculum, which literacy experts say is the most effective way to teach reading to most children.

🇸🇴🗳Somali electors have chosen a new president for the East African country: Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. He served a previous five-year term before the outgoing president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known as Farmaajo.

"I welcome my brother here, the new president Hassan Sheik Mohamud and wish him luck with the huge task... we will be in solidarity with him," Farmaajo said following Sunday’s election.

The election was nearly a year-and-a-half late, after a power crisis that threatened civil war. After forces loyal to Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble rejected an attempt by Farmaajo to extend his term by two years to overcome long-standing election process disagreements, the president yielded control over the planning process and the term extension.

🇮🇳 The Indian government has issued a decree banning the export of wheat to ensure food security and to help neighbouring and needy states. At the same time, Indian authorities allowed the supply of cereal crops, for which irrevocable letters of credit were issued until 13 May.

The US criticised the move, calling for "transparency" in trade:

🗣 “We are encouraging countries not to restrict exports because we think that any restriction on exports will exacerbate the food shortages,” US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated.

Demand for Indian wheat and wheat-based products has increased by more than 40 percent since February. According to India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the sudden spike in prices and the need to preserve India's food security have forced New Delhi to impose the export restrictions.
