🌪 Police report 2nd death from tornado in northern Michigan

A second person died in a tornado that hit northern Michigan, authorities reported Saturday, as crews searched a mobile home park that was virtually destroyed by a rare twister in an area with no weather sirens. More than 40 people were injured. Cars and trucks were turned on their sides or completely flipped over.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency, making further state resources available. Electricity was out for thousands of people in the area, and some roads still were clogged with downed poles and other wreckage.

💰 Dubai developer to buy Florida condo collapse site for $120M

A billionaire developer from Dubai is set to purchase the site of a South Florida condominium that collapsed last June, killing 98 people, for $120 million after no other bids were submitted by the Friday evening deadline for next week’s auction.

The auction for the 1.8-acre (0.72-hectare) parcel in Surfside was scheduled for Tuesday. Earlier this month, families of the victims reached a $997 million settlement with local officials

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is investigating the cause of the collapse, a process that is expected to take years.

🔥 Extreme fire threats prompt US suspension of planned burns

US Forest Service Chief Randy Moore cited extreme fire danger and unfavorable weather conditions Friday in announcing a suspension of all planned fire burning operations to clear brush and small trees on all national forest lands while his agency conducts a review of protocols and practices ahead of planned operations this fall.

The US Forest Service has faced heavy criticism for a prescribed fire in New Mexico that escaped its containment lines in April and joined with another blaze to form what is now the largest fire burning nationally. The fire has blackened more than 474 square miles (1,228 square kilometers), state officials expect the number of homes and other structures that have burned to rise to more than 1,000 as more assessments are done.

🗳 Pressure mounts over Oregon primary ballot fiasco

A Democratic state lawmaker in Oregon is calling for an investigation into a ballot-printing fiasco that will delay results from Tuesday’s primary by weeks, with a key US House race hanging in the balance in a state that prides itself on voter access and election transparency.

Tens of thousands of ballots in the state’s third-largest county were printed with blurred barcodes, making them unreadable by vote-counting machines — a mistake that wasn’t caught until ballots were already being returned in the vote-by-mail state. Election workers must now hand-transfer the votes from those ballots to new ones that can be read in a painstaking process that also raises the possibility of duplication errors.

A county audit conducted last year identified several problems with election procedures; however, only two of the four fixes suggested in the audit have been implemented.

🛢 National gas prices expected to hit $6 per gallon by the end of the summer

California drivers are grappling with the most expensive gas in the nation, shelling out an average $6.06 per gallon as of Thursday. That could soon be the fate of drivers in the rest of the nation, according to a JPMorgan analyst, which predicts the national average per gallon price could reach $6.20 this summer.

That would represent a more than 30% increase from the current national average of $4.59 per gallon, already a record high. Consumers are already spending thousands more annually on gasoline due to the surge in prices at the pump, with the typical household now spending an annualized $4,800 on gas — a 70% jump from a year ago.

The reason for the drawdown in gas inventories is an increase in exports, mostly to Mexico and Latin America. Sanctions placed against Russia are another significant contributor to the global rise in oil prices.

🏭 Apple is looking to expand production outside of China amid Beijing's zero-Covid policies

Analysts estimate that approximately 90% of Apple products are made by contract manufacturers in China, leaving the tech giant's success vulnerable to the whims of the Chinese Communist Party.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple suppliers such as Foxconn have been forced to shut down due to rising cases. Earlier this month, Quanta Computer — which produces three-quarters of Apple's MacBook products — shut down despite maintaining a "closed-loop" campus designed to prevent the spread of the virus.

Now, Apple is telling suppliers that it wants to expand production in India and Southeast Asia.

🇨🇦 Canada bans Huawei equipment from 5G networks, orders removal by 2024

Canada has banned the use of Huawei and fellow Chinese tech giant ZTE’s equipment in its 5G networks, its government has announced. In a statement, it cited national security concerns for the move.

The move makes Canada the latest member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance to have placed restrictions on the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment in their communication networks. In December 2018, Canada arrested Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on suspicion of violating US sanctions.

Canada has taken around three years to come to its decision about the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment in its telecoms networks.
