🍼 78,000 pounds of infant formula arrives in US
A military plane carrying enough specialty infant formula for more than half a million baby bottles arrived Sunday in Indianapolis, the first of several flights expected from Europe aimed at relieving a shortage that has sent parents scrambling to find enough to feed their children.
The formula weighed 78,000 pounds (35,380 kilograms), White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One as Biden flew from South Korea to Japan. About 1.5 million 8-ounce bottles of the three formulas, which are hypoallergenic for children with cow’s milk protein allergies, are expected to arrive this week.
The crisis follows the closure of the nation’s largest domestic manufacturing plant in Michigan in February due to safety issues.

❄️ Late spring Colorado snowstorm knocks out power for 210,000
A late spring Colorado snowstorm dumped several inches in the Denver metro area Saturday and knocked out electricity for about 210,000 customers, officials said. The wet snow weighed down tree branches and sent them toppling onto power lines, the KUSA television station reported. Much more snow fell in mountainous regions of Colorado.
By Saturday night, power had been restored to 160,000 customers but about 50,000 still did not have it back, the Xcel Energy Colorado utility said in a statement. The small Colorado community of Cripple Creek near the base of Pike’s Peak got 20 inches (51 centimeters) of snow.

📲 TikTok reportedly plans a ‘major push’ into gaming and games livestreamers
TikTok has already tried at least one in-app mini-game, as it teamed up with Feeding America to make Garden of Good, a FarmVille-like experience where players could earn points and use them to make a donation. It also announced a partnership with FarmVille developer Zynga late last year to make Disco Loco 3D, an HTML5-based endless runner that could work inside the app, but new reports suggest that’s just the start for TikTok’s gaming ambitions.
They include games to help streamers engage with viewers, including a Pictionary-like game, a “treasure box” gifting experience that doled out coins to random viewers after a set period of time, and a shopping experience allowing viewers to browse through products from a livestream.

🌱 Priceless seeds, sprouts key to US West’s post-fire future
A New Mexico facility where researchers work to restore forests devastated by fires faced an almost cruelly ironic threat: The largest wildfire burning in the US was fast approaching. Owen Burney and his team knew they had to save what they could. Atop their list was a priceless bank of millions of ponderosa pine, spruce and other conifer seeds meant to help restore fire-ravaged landscapes across the American West.
New Mexico State University’s Forestry Research Center in the mountain community of Mora is one of only a few such nurseries in the country and stands at the forefront of a major undertaking to rebuild more resilient forests as wildfires burn hotter, faster and more often.
More than 3,737 square miles (9,679 square kilometers) have burned across the US, almost triple the 10-year average.

🌪 Nearly all power restored in Gaylord after tornado
About 6,100 utility customers in Otsego County, Michigan, lost power due to Friday’s storms, according to Jackson-based Consumers Energy. State police said Sunday that electricity has been restored to 99% of utility customers in Gaylord, where a tornado killed two after striking in the county.
The tornado packed winds of 140 mph that tore roofs and walls from businesses and largely destroyed a mobile home park. State police Lt. Derrick Carroll has said the city doesn’t have tornado sirens as such storms are uncommon in northern Michigan.

The New York City police are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 48-year-old man on a Manhattan subway train on Sunday.

🤔 The United States has broad plans for a military buildup in the Arctic, and will invest in the Thule base in northern Greenland, the Danish newspaper Berlingske has claimed, citing a report by a US oversight authority.
▪️ According to the newspaper, the non-classified parts of the report suggest that billions of dollars will be spent in the Arctic, including Thule base, which was established in Greenland during World War II.
▪️ The base has an ageing infrastructure that the US is interested in upgrading, the US Air Force confirmed to the newspaper, without elaborating further.
