👮‍♂️ Police seek public’s help in search for NYC subway shooter

Police searching for an unidentified man who shot and killed another passenger on a moving New York City subway train asked for the public’s help Monday.

The shooter fled after the Q train arrived at the Canal Street station in Manhattan late Sunday morning. He shot and killed 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez, of Brooklyn, who was reportedly heading to brunch. Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that investigators had few leads and called the shooting “unimaginable.”

Witnesses told police the gunman was pacing the last car of the train, “and without provocation, pulled out a gun and fired it at the victim at close range."

🦠 Theories emerge for mysterious liver illnesses in children

Health officials remain perplexed by mysterious cases of severe liver damage in hundreds of young children around the world. The best available evidence points to a fairly common stomach bug that isn’t known to cause liver problems in otherwise healthy kids.

The illnesses are considered rare. CDC officials last week said they are now looking into 180 possible cases across the US. Most of the children were hospitalized, at least 15 required liver transplants and six died.

In a piece earlier this month in the medical journal Lancet, officials suggested that a combination of lingering coronavirus and an adenovirus infection could trigger a liver-damaging immune system reaction.

Top Southern Baptists stonewalled sex abuse victims

The seven-month investigation was conducted by Guidepost Solutions and described shocking details about how the nation's largest Protestant denomination dealt with a growing sexual abuse within its ranks and effectively created a culture that retraumatized survivors over two decades. In total, the report makes 17 recommendations, including requesting the SBC to create an offender database, publicly apologize to survivors, and define church and clergy standards.

Since then, several top Executive Committee leaders have resigned, and the body — under interim leadership — will meet Tuesday to discuss the report. The Southern Baptist Convention, located in Nashville, Tennessee, has about 47,000 cooperating churches and 13.6 million members, with a 26% increase in baptisms in 2021, making it one of the most powerful in American Christianity.

🎮 Activision Blizzard subsidiary wins union vote

The Game Workers Alliance, the union of quality assurance workers at Activision subsidiary studio Raven Software, has won their union vote. The votes were tallied today and the union passed with 19 out of 22 votes with two challenged ballots. The election makes the Game Workers Alliance (GWA) the first union for Activision Blizzard and only the second formal union in US video game industry.

In April of this year, Activision Blizzard converted over 1,000 temporary and contract employees to full time and granted them a minimum base pay starting at $20 / hr. Although all of the QA employees at Raven had already been converted to full-time status, they were informed that they would not be eligible to receive the minimum salary pay bump.

⚖️ DC attorney general sues Mark Zuckerberg over Cambridge Analytica scandal

District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine
has sued Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the Facebook* Cambridge Analytica scandal. The suit alleges that Zuckerberg was “directly responsible” for creating the lax privacy rules that allowed the consulting firm to harvest user data without consent, then failing to promptly inform users and ensure the data was deleted.

The suit covers an incident in which University of Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan collected personal information from around 270,000 Facebook users plus data from friends who hadn’t consented to the collection. The details only became known when the incident leaked in 2018, and Zuckerberg publicly accepted responsibility.

🧠 Researchers are using Google’s app to study the effect of phones on mental health

The University of Oregon is doing a study on the effect phones have on mental health, using Google’s Health Studies app. The goal of the study is to see how people are actually using their phones and how that affects their well-being.

Researchers hope that this app-based approach will let them find relationships that other studies have missed, such as how the amount of time you spend looking at a screen actually affects your sleep.

The study will track your phone usage and health patterns for four weeks, and the app will be available in the Play Store on Friday, May 27th.

Kate Moss is expected to testify for Johnny Depp against Amber Heard on Wednesday

Moss is expected to give her testimony to jurors through a live video link, where lawyers representing both Depp and Heard will have the opportunity to question her.  Heard had brought up Moss in her testimony earlier in the trial while recounting a tussle with Depp atop a flight of stairs. Heard said that Depp was attacking her sister and that she punched Depp.

Judge Penney Azcarate, who is overseeing the case in Fairfax County Court in Virginia, has put all the legal filings submitted during the trial under seal, so it's possible that the parties have fought over the admissibility of Moss in filings that remain out of the public eye. Other former partners of Depp, including Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder, have publicly supported him.
