✈️ Flight cancellations pile up during a busy Memorial Day weekend

Hundreds of flights worldwide had been cancelled by mid-afternoon Sunday, adding to the mounting number of scrubbed flights during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend in the US.

More than 1,260 flights had been canceled as of 2:30 p.m. EDT Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed more than 2,300 cancellations on Friday and another 1,500 on Saturday. More than 350 of Sunday’s cancellations involved aircraft scheduled to fly to or from US cities.

Many forecasters believe the number of travelers will match or even surpass pre-pandemic levels. Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a robust 45% higher than a year ago.

⚖️ Judge gives OK to $1B deal in Florida condo collapse

On Saturday, a Florida judge gave the initial approval to a more than $1 billion settlement for families who lost loved ones in the collapse of a Florida beachfront condominium. The unprecedented collapse of the 12-story building in the early morning hours of June 24, 2021 took 98 lives. The quick settlement means that potentially years of court battles will be avoided.

The vast sum of money comes from several sources, including insurance companies, engineering companies and a luxury condominium that had recently been built next door. None of the parties are admitting wrongdoing. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is investigating the cause of the collapse, a process expected to take years.

🔥Critical fire condition warnings issued across US Southwest

The 7-week-old fire, the largest in New Mexico history, has burned 491 square miles (1,272 square kilometers) of forest in rugged terrain east of Santa Fe since being started in April by two planned burns.

The return of drier and warmer weather combined with strong winds poses a threat of increased fire activity over the Memorial Day weekend, prompting officials to urge the public to secure vehicle chains and be careful with possible fire sources.

Nearly 3,000 firefighters and other personnel were assigned to the fire, which contained around 48% of its perimeter. Initial estimates say the fire has destroyed at least 330 homes, but state officials expect the number of homes and other structures that have been burned to rise to more than 1,000.
