🌬 Hurricane Agatha makes landfall, could spawn disturbance in Gulf of Mexico

Agatha is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in May in the eastern Pacific, said Jeff Masters, meteorologist with Yale Climate Connections. The cyclone made landfall on Monday about 5 miles (10 kilometers) west of Puerto Angel as a strong Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained wings of 105 mph (165 kph). It was moving northeast at a pace of 8 mph (13 kph).

National emergency officials said they had assembled a task force of more than 9,300 people for the area and more than 200 shelters were opened as forecasters warned of dangerous storm surge and flooding from heavy rains.

The US National Hurricane Center
said the storm was expected to drop 10 to 16 inches (250 to 400 millimeters) of rain on parts of Mexico's Oaxaca, with isolated maximums of 20 inches (500 millimeters), posing the threat of flash floods and mudslides.

🚫 Senators ask Apple and Google to prohibit data collection that targets abortion seekers

A group of US senators led by Ed Markey of Massachusetts is calling on Apple and Google to implement new app store policies that prohibit developers from collecting data that would threaten women seeking abortions. Pointing to the prevalence of online platforms selling user information to data brokers, the group warns that abortion prosecutors and “even vigilantes” could exploit those practices to intimidate women who seek abortions or harass them retroactively.

The letters follow a separate call from Congressional Democrats that came earlier in the week urging Google to stop collecting location data over many of the same concerns. Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont also signed the letters.

📈 Gas prices have hit record highs but don't expect Biden to lower them

Gas prices have blown past record after record in recent weeks. On Friday, the average gallon of gas in the US hit $4.599 — roughly 51% higher than a year ago. The average on Monday, after drivers hit the road for Memorial Day getaways, was $4.619.

About 59% of the price of gas at the pump comes from the cost of crude in global markets, but the additional release of barrels, or even increases in US production, would only add a proverbial drop in the bucket in the 100-million-barrel-per-day global oil market.

President Biden moved to stem rising gas prices and compensate for the loss of Russian supply by ordering the release of 1 million barrels a day over six months from the Strategic Petroleum ReservesA tax holiday could help ease prices, but it wouldn't cause any significant drop, especially against the backdrop of low energy inventories.

🇷🇺 🇺🇸 The United States sees risks of the Ukraine crisis escalating and is working to prevent it, including through contacts with Russian military chiefs, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said.

▪️ In an interview with Fox News ahead of the Memorial Day, Milley was asked if Washington could run into trouble if Ukraine used US-provided weapons against the Russian territory, hinting at the reports that US could deliver advanced long-range systems capable of striking Russian towns and cities. Milley responded by saying that "there is always a possibility of escalation."

💬 "We have to closely manage the escalation and the chances of escalation. So, we do that. That's why you saw Secretary Austin talk to his counterpart, that's why you saw me talk to my counterpart: in order to manage escalation and prevent this thing from expanding into something much more horrific than it already is", Milley told the broadcaster.

🇹🇼 🇺🇸 Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen expressed hope during the visit of US Senator Tammy Duckworth that Taiwan and the US will deepen their cooperation in the sphere of security. The senator is one of the main backers of the Taiwan Partnership Act, which aims to deepen the ties between Washington and the island, which China considers a breakaway province.

🗯 "As a result [of the Taiwan Partnership Act], the US Department of Defence is now actively planning cooperation between the National Guard and Taiwan's defence forces," Tsai noted in her statement.

🤔 The act has yet to be passed by the US Congress; however, Senator Duckworth said that there was strong bipartisan support for it during her visit to Taiwan. The American lawmaker further stressed that the Partnership Act goes beyond just military cooperation, and also concerns economic ties with the island.
