🏙 After mass shooting, NYC explores gun detectors in subways
The technology to scan for weapons does exist, and is used now to screen people at places like sports stadiums and theme parks, but security experts say installing such a system in the city’s sprawling, porous subway system in a way that would make a difference would be difficult, if not impossible.
The problem wouldn’t necessarily be the technology — but rather the reality that scanners need to be accompanied by human operators to confront people carrying firearms illegally.
In the New York City subway, the screening wouldn’t resemble airport checkpoints, an untenable solution for a system with 472 stations, all with multiple entrances. Instead, Adams referenced a technology that uses sensors to detect metal but also can determine the shape of an object, such as a gun, while people pass by uninterrupted.

❌ Shootings prompt debate on purchase age for AR-style rifles The gunmen in two of the nation’s most recent mass shootings legally bought the semi-automatic rifles they used in their massacres after they turned 18. That’s prompting Congress and some governors and state lawmakers to revisit the question of whether to raise the minimum age for purchasing such high-powered weapons. Only six states require someone to be at least 21 years old to buy rifles and shotguns. Federal law already prohibits federally licensed dealers from selling handguns to anyone under age 21, but people age 18 to 20 can still buy handguns from unlicensed dealers in their state. Lawmakers in New York and Utah have proposed legislation that would raise the minimum age to buy AR-15 style rifles to 21. A similar restriction is expected to move as soon as next week in the US House, where it has some bipartisan support, but the legislation faces uncertainty in the closely divided Senate.

🍼 Biden cites strain on families from infant formula shortage
President Joe Biden on Wednesday acknowledged during a meeting with manufacturers the nationwide infant formula shortage that has been straining American families.
To date, the Biden administration has tried to address the situation by importing foreign supplies and using the Defense Production Act to speed domestic production.
The White House said a third round of formula shipments from overseas will begin next week, from producer Kendamil in Britain. Shipments from Bubs Australia are also expected to be delivered next week.
The push on imports will help but will not immediately bring an end to supply shortages that have left families dependent on formula facing empty shelves or limits on purchases. US regulators and Abbott announced an agreement last month that would help pave the way for reopening a shuttered plant, though production has not restarted.

⚖️ After decades in prison, California man innocent of murder
A California man who spent 21 years in prison for a gang murder he said he didn’t commit has been declared factually innocent by a judge, authorities announced Wednesday. Alexander Torres appeared at a news conference with Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón and members of the California Innocence Project, which fought for his exoneration.
Torres was a 20-year-old member of a Compton street gang when he was accused of jumping out of a car and shooting a rival gang member, Martin Guitron, who was shot eight times with a handgun.
Torres was convicted on June 12, 2001, and sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison. He was released from prison after a judge set aside his conviction at the request of Torres and the Conviction Integrity Unit of the district attorney’s office, which cited “newly discovered evidence” that someone else committed the killing.

🗣 Meta* COO Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down after 14 years
Zuckerberg called the change an “end of an era” and said that he doesn’t plan to replace Sandberg’s exact role in the company’s structure. His current chief growth officer Javier Olivan, already one of the company’s most powerful but lesser-known executives, will take over as COO in what Zuckerberg says is a “more traditional” COO role.
Sandberg joined the company in 2008 to help the then-23-year-old Zuckerberg navigate the path to an IPO and build an ads business, which she has led since. Though she was recently accused of leveraging her position to squash negative reporting about her ex-boyfriend and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, her decision to leave Meta* was unrelated to that scandal, the person added, saying that Facebook*’s internal review of the matter had recently been closed.
