⚖️ After decades in prison, California man innocent of murder

A California man who spent 21 years in prison for a gang murder he said he didn’t commit has been declared factually innocent by a judge, authorities announced Wednesday. Alexander Torres appeared at a news conference with Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón and members of the California Innocence Project, which fought for his exoneration.

Torres was a 20-year-old member of a Compton street gang when he was accused of jumping out of a car and shooting a rival gang member, Martin Guitron, who was shot eight times with a handgun.

Torres was convicted on June 12, 2001, and sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison. He was released from prison after a judge set aside his conviction at the request of Torres and the Conviction Integrity Unit of the district attorney’s office, which cited “newly discovered evidence” that someone else committed the killing.

🗣 Meta* COO Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down after 14 years

Zuckerberg
called the change an “end of an era” and said that he doesn’t plan to replace Sandberg’s exact role in the company’s structure. His current chief growth officer Javier Olivan, already one of the company’s most powerful but lesser-known executives, will take over as COO in what Zuckerberg says is a “more traditional” COO role.

Sandberg joined the company in 2008 to help the then-23-year-old Zuckerberg navigate the path to an IPO and build an ads business, which she has led since. Though she was recently accused of leveraging her position to squash negative reporting about her ex-boyfriend and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, her decision to leave Meta* was unrelated to that scandal, the person added, saying that Facebook*’s internal review of the matter had recently been closed.

*Meta, Facebook, and Instagram are banned in Russia over extremist activities.

Elon Musk tells SpaceX and Tesla workers they must return to the office full-time

Elon Musk delivered an ultimatum to Tesla and Space X’s corporate workforces: Spend a minimum of 40 hours a week in the office, or leave the company.

Musk taking a hardline stance on remote work is in stark contrast to a number of other major tech companies that have allowed all or most workers to request to work-from-home permanently, including Facebook, TwitterSalesforce and Slack. Apple recently suspended a requirement that workers return to the office at least three days a week.

Tesla’s career website still lists a number of salaried and hourly remote positions. It’s unclear whether the new policy will apply to those positions.

🧑‍🎓 Biden administration will cancel student debt for half a million students from Corinthian Colleges

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden's Education Department announced all remaining student-loan borrowers who attended now-defunct, for-profit Corinthian Colleges are getting their debt balances wiped out. The announcement approved $5.8 billion for a group student-loan forgiveness claim that covers 560,000 former Corinthian students.

Corinthian shut down in 2015 following a number of investigations that found the school engaged in predatory behavior that pushed students to take out loans when that was not the best option for them.

Wednesday's announcement is the biggest group approval the department has acted on to date, and it will include borrowers who did not submit relief claims themselves.

NASA outsources development of Moon spacesuit

Today, NASA announced that two private companies — Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace — will develop the next-generation spacesuits that future astronauts will wear to conduct spacewalks and eventually traverse the surface of the moon.

Currently, NASA is aiming to land the first Artemis astronauts on the moon by 2025 — a one-year delay from the 2024 deadline originally set by the Trump administration. When the astronauts do land, NASA wants them to be equipped with proper spacesuits they can use to explore the moon’s terrain.

NASA announced that the total value of the contracts is $3.5 billion, though the space agency would not say the individual values of each company’s contract. Once the suits are complete, though, the companies will own them and have the option to use them for other purposes unrelated to NASA.
