💉 Novavax hopes its COVID shot wins over FDA, vaccine holdouts
After long delays, the US Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide within weeks whether to authorize Novavax’s vaccine. However, the move for a new choice comes somewhat late in the pandemic, with about three-quarters of American adults already vaccinated.
But the company is hoping to find a niche among some of the unvaccinated millions who might agree to a more traditional kind of shot - a protein vaccine - and also to become a top choice for boosters, regardless of which type people got first. Only about half of vaccinated adults have gotten a booster. Protein vaccines have been used for years to prevent hepatitis B, shingles and other diseases.
The Novavax vaccine already is used in parts of Europe and multiple other countries, but FDA clearance is a key hurdle. And health experts are closely watching to see if a new tool offers advantages or maybe even offering somewhat broader immunity.

Ohio governor to sign bill allowing armed school employees
Ohio school districts could begin arming employees as soon as this fall under legislation approved by Republican lawmakers and set to be signed by GOP Gov. Mike DeWine. The bill will protect children by ensuring instruction is specific to schools and including significant scenario-based training, DeWine said late Wednesday in announcing his support.
Under the latest version of the bill, school employees who carry guns would need up to 24 hours of initial training, then up to eight hours of requalification training annually.
DeWine, who is expected to sign the bill later this month, also announced that the state’s construction budget will provide $100 million for school security upgrades in schools and $5 million for upgrades at colleges.

🏥 Tulsa gunman targeted surgeon he blamed for pain
A man who blamed his surgeon for continuing pain after a recent back operation bought an AR-style rifle and opened fire hours later at a Tulsa medical office, killing the doctor and three other people in an attack that ended with him taking his own life, police said Thursday.
The gunman called the clinic repeatedly complaining of pain and specifically targeted and killed Dr. Preston Phillips, the doctor who performed the surgery. Dr. Stephanie Husen, receptionist Amanda Glenn and patient William Love were also killed, police said.
Phillips was an orthopedic surgeon with an interest in spinal surgery and joint reconstruction, according to a profile on the clinic’s website. The chief identified the shooter as Michael Louis, 45, of Muskogee, Oklahoma.

🏭 Colorado coal pile slide buries 2 workers
Two workers at a southern Colorado coal-fired electricity generating plant were buried Thursday when a slide happened on an 80-foot-high (24-meter-high) coal pile and rescuers were trying to find them, officials said.
Witnesses reported that the accident happened on a feeder pile for the station’s coal-fired power plant, which is Colorado’s largest and is operated by Xcel Energy. Xcel spokeswoman Lacey Nygard said the workers are employed by Savage, a Salt Lake City-based firm contracted by Xcel to operate and maintain the coal yard at Comanche and at other Xcel coal plants. Xcel is working with Savage and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department to determine the cause of the accident, Nygard said.

🎞 Netflix is finally taking a page from the rest of Hollywood
In Q1 of 2022, it finally happened: Netflix had a bad quarter. It lost over 200,000 subscribers and acknowledged that newer competitors like Disney Plus and HBO Max were effectively putting an end to how the company had been doing business for nearly a decade.
Netflix, with its then near-endless source of cash and no need to please distributors or theaters, could afford to produce more varied content to try and secure people’s subnoscriptions every month. Netflix was supposed to transform Hollywood. Instead, it’s turning to the same practices that made its competitors, only without the lucrative franchises, fandoms, and huge back catalogs those same competitors enjoy.
CEO Ted Sarandos noted in Netflix’s last earnings call that it would focus on “big event films,” and the company has spent the last couple of months ruthlessly wiping out large parts of departments like animation (more expensive to produce with lower returns).
